An unknown smoking liquid left at the transfer site in North Pole caused borough officials to close the site Thursday afternoon.

Fairbanks North Star Borough hazardous materials personnel responded, according to an announcement by the municipality.

“We’re going to keep the North Pole transfer site closed until we figure out what the substance is, deal with it and then clean it up,” the borough said in a social media announcement. “The next nearest transfer sites are at Badger and Holmes and in Moose Creek. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to have the North Pole transfer site back in operation shortly.”
