FAIRBANKS — The potential move of Eielson Air Force Base’s F-16 squadron doesn’t make sense to Anchorage Chamber of Commerce President Andrew Halcro, who said Alaska’s largest city has nowhere to put those personnel.

Halcro, speaking to the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, said the Air Force’s proposal to move the squadron to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is “absurd.” He said Anchorage already has a waiting list of 4,000 people for affordable housing, and that homes costing less than $500,000 are quickly snatched off the market.

He compared the possible F-16 relocation from Fairbanks to efforts to move the capital from Juneau — crippling moves for Alaska’s regional economies.

“I think a number of people don’t have any grasp of what makes the economy run,” he said.
