FAIRBANKS — Someone shot a Fairbanks power utility microwave tower last week on Ester Dome and may also have damaged cellphone tower infrastructure in the area.

The Golden Valley Electric Association reported damage to their dome-top array Thursday afternoon, according to spokeswoman Corrine Bradish. The gunshot damage did not affect power service because automatic backups kicked in.

The electricity cooperative uses the microwave for communication between fieldworkers and to transfer data between power substations, she said.

Bradish said she’d heard other Ester Dome properties, including a cellphone tower, were also vandalized Thursday.

Alaska State Troopers received a report of gunshot damage to the microwave tower Friday afternoon, according to a news release.

Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said Monday she doesn’t know if other dome-top sites were also damaged because the trooper who responded isn’t on duty. Troopers ask anyone with information about the shooting to call 451-5100.

Several AT&T customers in the Goldstream Valley near Ester Dome have complained of poor cellphone reception during the last few days, but it’s not clear if the reception is related to the other damage to Ester Dome site.

An AT&T representative could not be reached for comment Monday.
