FAIRBANKS - The temperatures plunged overnight as skies cleared in Interior Alaska, with many waking up to readings of around minus 40 on Christmas morning.

Expect temperatures to stay in the frigid zone for the next couple of days. According to the National Weather Service, highs today should only reach 25 to 35 below zero, although they will be a bit warmer in the hills. Lows tonight will be 35 to 45 below zero, with ice fog in low, calm areas.

Highs Thursday will hover in the minus 30s, dipping even further overnight.

The cold is expected to break Saturday, when highs rise to 5 to 15 below zero, with a chance of snow.
