FAIRBANKS - A fire destroyed most of a two-story home near Eielson Air Force Base Monday morning, according to the North Star Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters received a call at about 12:19 a.m. from 5730 Eielson Farm Road, North Star Battalion Chief Justin Boddy said. The home is just inside North Star's fire protection district.
The call was initially dispatched as a chimney fire, but as firefighters traveled to the home, the fire spread to the roof, he said. The residents escaped safely and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The fire destroyed most of the home but many personal belongings were saved, he said.
The home had an assessed value of $284,427.
It was difficult to get water to the remote home. From the North Star department alone, six engines and three command vehicles responded, Boddy said. Eielson Air Force Base, North Pole, Steese and Fairbanks fire departments provided mutual aid. Firefighters remained on scene until 11:46 a.m.
It was an especially busy night for the North Star department, Boddy said. On the same night the department responded to two medical calls and another chimney fire that did not spread to a roof, he said.
