A Fairbanks man is dead after deliberately causing a head-on collision in a stolen car in a suicide attempt and then shooting himself later after he was contacted by law enforcement officials.
According to an Alaska State Troopers news release, Reece Quiocho-Sumera, 22, got into a verbal altercation with his girlfriend and then stole her car Friday morning. A few minutes later, while driving on Badger Road, Quiocho-Sumera deliberately caused a head-on collision with another vehicle. He told the driver of the second vehicle that he had hit him intentionally because he wanted to commit suicide. The second driver sustained minor injuries.
Troopers learned of the collision at 10:50 a.m., but Quiocho-Sumera had left the scene. They located him on Plack Road, where an Alaska Wildlife Trooper contacted him. Quiocho-Sumera placed a gun to his head and fired.
Troopers on scene started life-saving measures, but Quiocho-Sumera was pronounced dead when medics arrived.
Next of kin have been notified. Quiocho-Sumera's body will be sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Troopers are continuing to investigate the incident.
