FAIRBANKS — Denali Park Road is now open to 12 Mile, weather permitting.
The National Park Service opened the road to the Mountain Vista Trailhead, a rest area east of the Savage River Campground, beginning at noon Sunday. Vault toilets at the trailhead are open for use.
Road-clearing crews started clearing the 92-mile road into Denali National Park and Preserve on March 17. Crews are running behind schedule this year because of last week’s snow storms and significant ice buildup during the winter, the National Park Service said in a press release. By this time of year, crews usually are working in the Teklanika Flats area, more than 10 miles past their present location.
Motorists should expect to encounter snow and ice on shaded sections of the road until overnight temperatures remain above freezing. Drivers also should be alert for service personnel along the side of the road steaming culverts and for heavy equipment being used for road-clearing operations.
The service expects to open the road to the Savage River at 15 Mile in the next week or so.
The Murie Science and Learning Center, at 1.3 Mile, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for visitor information and backcountry permits.
