FAIRBANKS — Troopers identified the 5-year-old boy who died as a result of a North Pole duplex fire Friday afternoon as Elijah J. Gayramon.

Next of kin have been notified, trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said. However, no further information is available as troopers and the state fire marshal continue their investigation.

Fire crews responded to the 4:34 p.m. call on Biathalon Avenue from North Star Volunteer Fire Department, North Pole Fire Department, Fort Wainwright Fire Department and an ambulance crew from the Fairbanks Fire Department.

North Star Fire Chief Jeff Tucker said that upon arrival smoke was visible escaping from under the front door of the downstairs apartment. The fire was confined to one bedroom.

Peters said troopers were notified about 5:45 p.m. that the child died at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

The cause and circumstances surrounding the fire have not been confirmed, Peters said.

The structure incurred heavy smoke damage. Tucker estimates damages at $40,000.
