FAIRBANKS — A fatal vehicle collision closed the Parks Highway on Wednesday afternoon at 345 Mile, near the George Parks memorial turnoff, according to Alaska State Troopers.

David A. Yudin, 21, of Fairbanks was driving a small passenger vehicle and collided with a semi in the oncoming lane about 3:50 p.m., Megan Peters with the Alaska State Troopers said. Yudin was declared dead at the scene.

Troopers investigating the crash believe the Yudin lost control while rounding a turn and drove into the oncoming lane. The truck driver, Michael S. Luper, 25, of Eagle River, attempted to take evasive action to avoid the collision, but the passenger side of Yudin's vehicle struck the front of Luper's vehicle. Both vehicles slid into the ditch.

Yudin was wearing a seat belt. Luper did not report any injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt. The drivers were the only occupants of each vehicle.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor.
