FAIRBANKS — A Fairbanks man has been given a three-year prison term for beating a man with a hammer last fall because of an unpaid debt.
Jesse Garcia, 36, pleaded guilty to a single count of first-degree robbery last month as part of a plea agreement. The case is still pending for Garcia’s co-defendant Joseph Keene, 29.
The two were arrested in October on charges that they drove a man around the North Pole area, taking electronics from his brother and using his bank card to steal more than $500. The victim identified Garcia as the man who hit him with the hammer.
The victim spoke at the Garcia’s hearing and said he suffered three broken vertebrae and stitches in head. He said he was not satisfied with the three-year sentence, according to log notes of last month’s sentencing hearing.
Garcia’s court-appointed attorney described the assault as a drug deal gone bad, according to court log notes.
