FAIRBANKS — Last month’s fatal fire in North Pole began with a child playing with a lighter, according to an investigation into the fire by Alaska State Troopers and the state fire marshal.

Investigators concluded the fire spread to clothing or a blanket and claimed the life of the child, 5-year-old Elijah J. Gayramon, said trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters.

An adult and another child were present in the duplex at the time of the fire. The adult heard a smoke detector go off and called the fire department, she said.

The fire was reported at 4:34 p.m. at a home on Biathalon Avenue. Gayramon was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and died about an hour later.

No one else was hurt in the fire, which was confined to one room, Peters said.
