Feb. 11, 2003 — As the rain continues to fall on Fairbanks on Monday, officials from the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race toured the city to determine whether they will move the start of the Last Great Race to Fairbanks for the first time.

Believe it or not, they liked what they saw and said chances are good that Fairbanks will play host to the world’s longest, most-famous sled dog race. Iditarod officials are expected to announce the decision today.

Feb. 11, 1988 — A local rendition of the Miracle on Ice played to a roaring crowd of 2,200 in the Big Dipper Ice Arena on Wednesday night.

The Alaska Gold Kings upset Switzerland’s Olympic team 5-1, drawing a standing ovation and prompting comparisons to the U.S. Olympic team’s gold medal win against the Russians in the 1980 Olympic Games.

“I’m not sure how you say it in American, but the miracle has not run out yet,” said observer Tore Jobs, assistant coach of the Norwegian team.

Feb. 11, 1963 — Royal Canadian Air Force search and rescue planes are combing more than 600 miles along the route of the Alaska Highway today looking for a missing Fairbanks based airplane.

Missing on a flight from Fairbanks to San Francisco is a Howard aircraft, number N-58856, and piloted by Ralph Flores.

Feb. 11, 1938 — Night school classes at the Fairbanks Public School will be reorganized March 1. At present, classes in typewriting, shorthand and accounting meet for two-hour periods Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The present term, which is of eight weeks’ duration, will end Feb. 28. It is not probable that there will be any change in the schedule for the second term.
