FAIRBANKS — Frigid, icy conditions coupled with dense ice fog made for particularly hazardous driving on the Richardson Highway near Fairbanks on Monday morning.

The Fairbanks Police Department sent out a Nixle alert just after 10 a.m., advising drivers to use caution on the Richardson Highway and to keep their headlights on.

At least a half-dozen accidents were reported in the 5-mile stretch of the highway within the city that sees a high traffic volume.

One towing company refused to pick up vehicles in the area because of bad conditions, said Lt. Dan Welborn with the Fairbanks Police Department.

Conditions improved for the afternoon commute, but the National Weather Service is predicting more ice fog through noon today.
