FAIRBANKS — Alaska is joining 21 states in backing a lawsuit before the U.S. Supreme Court that seeks to allow 18- to 20-year-olds to purchase handguns.

Alaska Attorney General Michael Geraghty co-signed a supporting brief filed by Alabama’s attorney general in support of the National Rifle Association. The lawsuit takes on the federal law that bars federally licensed firearms dealers from selling or transferring handguns to 18- to 20-year-old buyers.

The lawsuit argues that people old enough to join the armed services should be able to own a handgun.
