Tucked away down the hill behind McKinley Chalet Resort is the artist-in-residence cabin. Every evening, mid-May through mid-September, from 5-9 p.m., an Alaska artist works on his or her craft. Visitors are invited to come in, visit with the artist, or just watch the artist at work.
The program began in 2013 and has proven to be very successful. It’s a chance for Alaskan artists to share their talents with visitors. Each artist is invited for one week. The artists are free to explore the Denali area on their own during the day. In the evening, they hone their craft, display their artistry and visit with guests.
The artist cabin is strategically located at McKinley Chalet Resort’s Denali Square, which also includes Karsten’s Public House, a restaurant and bar with a large outdoor deck, Old Sourdough Studio, a bookstore and other retail shops. It is sponsored by Holland America Princess.
This year, the program also includes two artists who were selected to be artists in residence at Denali National Park. They are Celia Garland and Brenda Ziamany, two of five artists selected this year. They will each spend 10 days in the park being inspired for their work. Their time in the park will end with a public outreach activity. Each artist also donates a piece of artwork to the park’s collection. They are challenged to create pieces inspired by their park experiences and that offer visitors fresh and innovative perspectives of the park.
“We are continuing to build synergies with the two programs,” said Kristi Solonen, who helps spearhead the program.
The cabin this year has already hosted some notable artists, including Kathleen Carlo Kendall, native arts carver; Sara Tabbert, who carves and paints wood; Kirah Van Sickle, landscape artist; Katie Craney, mixed media artist; Susan Becker, native beadwork; and Susan Joy Share, paper art.
