Every year, Hockey Week In Fairbanks, features a specially made logo to honor the event. This year, the 14th annual, for the first time, the logo features a female hockey player. That logo is this year’s collector lapel pin.

“It dawned on us that we hadn’t featured girls or women in our logo, so it was time for us to do so,” said Randy Zarnke, co-director of Hockey Week.

The logo/pin was designed by Rick Redick, art director for the Great Alaskan Shirt Company/Trademark and Raven Screens. He has created the pins since the inaugural event. He said he enjoys the creative challenge of creating a unique design every year.

“It’s always gratifying to see the pins being worn around town for months before and after the event,” he said. “Hockey Week is a great celebration and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

Hockey Week in Fairbanks is a mid-winter celebration of Fairbanks’ favorite sport, offering a variety of special activities from Feb. 28-March 8. Watch for details on the annual Quest for the Golden Puck, the Backyard Rink contest and other special events — plus lots of hockey.

The pins are distributed and worn starting right now.

“Some people just enjoy wearing the pins and being recognized as supporters of the event,” said Anna Culley, co-director of Hockey Week. “Other folks take pride in having a full set of pins representing every year. They eagerly await the release of the new pin each year. After the event is over, the pin is carefully added to their collection.”

Redick said he finds it gratifying to see the pins worn around town for months before and after the event.

“Hockey Week is a great celebration and I’m glad to be part of it,” he said.

Zarnke looks forward to distributing the pins every year.

“I get a lot of personal satisfaction from distributing the pins each year,” he said. “It’s my way of connecting with people who love our event. Once the first few pins are seen around town, the demand peaks pretty quickly.”

“I’m sure it will be a popular pin,” he added.

He said he can easily be found at various ice rinks, attending either the Nanooks or Ice Dogs hockey games from now until the end of Hockey Week.

“Track me down and I’ll be happy to give you a pin,” he said.
