Dog dies on Yukon Quest trail

FAIRBANKS - A dog has died on the trail of the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race, according to a news release from race officials.

A dog named Bashful in veteran musher Dave Dalton's team died Monday. Head veterinarian Kathleen McGill said the dog would be transported to Whitehorse where a necropsy will be conducted.

Dalton, 56, of Healy, was is running in 9th place and had reached Pelly Crossing, Yukon. He has started the Yukon Quest 24 times and finished 18 times, tied with Yukon musher Frank Turner for the most Quest finishes. He won the Vet's Choice Award in 2003, when he finished the Quest with all 14 of the dogs with which he started the race.
