Valdez sweeps past Delta

FAIRBANKS — Delta Junction’s Ruslan Kolesnik hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send Saturday night’s boys high school basketball game into overtime, but the Huskies couldn’t keep the momentum going and suffered a 69-59 Aurora Conference loss to the Valdez Buccaneers.
The game was tied 24-24 at halftime, 38-38 at the end of the third quarter and 57-57 at the end of regulation.
Valdez outscored Delta 12-2 in overtime, with Glen Sax scoring four points and Colin Irish canning a key 3-pointer.
James Rogers poured in a game-high 25 points for the Bucceneers. Taylor Haltness added 20 points for the winners and Irish finished with 10. Irish drilled three 3-pointers, with two of those coming in the fourth quarter.
Kolesnik scored a team-high 16 points and had Delta’s only two points in overtime on a pair of free throws. Andrey Kolesnik added 11 points for the Huskies, and Matt Dighton tallied 10.
The win gave the Buccaneers a split in the two-game series.
Valdez registered a 36-19 win in the girls game to complete a sweep against the Huskies.
The Buccaneers led 11-8 at halftime, but outscored the Huskies 25-11 in the second half to win going away.
Caitlin Auble tallied 12 points to lead Valdez, with Alex Wegner and Kelsey Lematta picking up eight apiece. Shelby O’Flanagan scored nine points for Delta Junction.
