Cruise lines slash prices

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The state's major cruise ship operators are slashing prices in hopes of filling ships this summer season.
Alaska's tourism industry is taking a hit because of the downturn in the U.S. economy, as well as the slowdown in the economy globally.
Cruise ships bring roughly 1 million visitors to Alaska each year.
To get them here this summer, cruise ship lines are discounting tickets by as much as 40 percent.
John Binkley, executive director of the Alaska Cruise Association, says the discounting is because of some of the worst sales cruise lines have encountered.

I can see the scary headline now, "Luxury Liners Need to Be Bailed Out". That will be good for business.
Makes you wonder why anyone paid full price before. Even with a 40% cut they are making a profit. Anyone get the feeling, once the prices are cut, no one will pay full price again in the future.
thats funny, my friends parents said that the rooms they wanted on the ship of their choice of cruise companies, have been sold out for months for the year 2009. I wonder if the fare cuts are only for the cheap rooms (with no view).
"The state's major cruise ship operators"
Do they mean companies actually based in the State of Alaska or international cruise companies like NCL and Holland, Carnival etc.?
I'd guess non-Alaskan. You can bet Binkley won't lower his rates for anyone.
