Abandoned Alaskans

Published Monday, September 8, 2008

Sept. 5, 2008

To the editor:

I find it interesting that Sarah Palin would abandon the office of governor of Alaska just to become John McCain’s running mate. Doesn’t that tell us something about her true ambitions?

Now it seems that she’s just another opportunistic politician that is only too eager to abandon Alaskans that placed so much trust in her.

I like Sarah Palin but, like so many others, I feel betrayed by her actions. So why did McCain pick Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential candidate? Is it because she is the most qualified for the office among all the potential Republicans. Hardly, she is probably the least qualified. So why was Palin the choice?

Well, it’s quite obvious that McCain chose her in an attempt to capture the women’s’ vote for the Republicans. The idea that women in America would now vote for McCain just because he has a woman on the ticket is totally ridiculous. That notion is an insult to the intelligence of America’s women voters.

McCain wants our vote so he can continue the same failed policies of George Bush of the last eight years. Tax cuts for the wealthy, continue the unpopular war in Iraq even though the Iraqis want our troops out of their country. With America’s economy in shambles, home foreclosures at an all-time high and other problems, it’s time for change.

The man to bring about that change and new direction for our country is Barack Obama. He will bring great intelligence, judgment and vision to the office of president and will be a great leader of the United States and of the entire world.

By contrast, what does McCain offer the country? Just more of the same old policies that got us into the mess we’re in and, yes, a pretty face for vice president. Thank you.

The arrogance of some is so amusing! Yes you like her and miss her and then rip into her. The pundits and democrats are so smug, she is just to get women, it is an insult! Guess what? No one with brains expected Hillary's supporters to jump on the bandwagon their interests do not coincide at all.
She was picked to bring conservatives unhappy with McCain back into the fold. DONE. Energize the base. DONE. Appeal to NRA folks. Done. Grab attention for the party on the heels of the Democratic Convention. Done. Raise a lot of money quickly. BONUS. Draw support after viscious attacks. BONUS. Introduce a new generation of Republicans. Done.
While the media and Democrats laugh at how McCain's gamble with her failed they are going to miss McCain/Palin go sailing ahead with a smile. It is still early but the polls are tied or McCain/Palin moving ahead. Pulled the spotlight right off of Obama/Biden. Friday gathered the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police DESPITE Trooper-gate. Olbermann and Matthews bounced from MSNBC anchor seats for leftist bias. The Democrats are going to take their third "Can't lose" election in a row and give it away! Then they will have 4 more years to look at each other and say "what happened?"

Mr. Hayden, your comments rate right up there with the other Obama sheep. I'm waiting to hear "four legs good, two legs bad" or the updated mantra, "Choice".

"abandon the office of governor" - Is it that you don't read the news or is it that you just don't understand it. Governor Palin is still performing her duties in addition to campaigning for VP. What exactly has Senator Obama been doing for two years? Besides authoring & co-sponsoring Senate bill S2433? (Look it up.)

"So why was Palin the choice?" Because the American people want someone that supports American values like Sarah Palin. Not out of touch snobs from the left. The polls show the trend. The poll that counts will prove it in November.

"continue the same failed policies"? Apparently you didn't do your homework before you repeated what you were told to say. McCain is not the regular Republican Senator. He votes both sides of the isle. Biden was in the Senate 10 years before McCain & look what he's done to the country. You’re telling me a Senator from Delaware is better qualified than the Governor of Alaska?

Sen. Obama has demonstrated he wants the be the "world" president. When the world holds an election & Obama is running, I’ll compare his record to the other candidates. If Obama's record isn’t any better than it is now, I may be voting for a dog catcher from Brazil.

Is Senator Obama guilty of abandoning the Illinois voters? Is Joe Biden guilty of abandoning the Delaware voters?

Ever dawn on you she can do much more for Alaskans as VP?

    Let's talk betrayal Democrat style.

Just look at Obama's statement. Won't call them policies, because they are anything but policies.. Especially like the one where he will spend billions and billions on new social programs, but does not plan to raise taxes. In the same breath talks about the massive debt and how we need to get rid of it and again no taxes. Then goes on to say Medicare is not working. Guess we know which program will take the first hit so he can build the ones he likes.

EOD - I am from Brazil, and I can tell by the way that the brazilians are active Politically, I would prefer the dog catcher from Brazil than Obama's qualifications.
BTW - Is it not funny how the Dems are desperate?!

What do you mean "..just to become McCains running mate"?
With knowing ALL the answers to life and the world what YOU do if offered the Vice Presidency?
Believe me, with egos such as yours, you'd be shoving others aside to jump on the wagon JUST to get your views heard!
    Peace

Palin only accepted the nomination because she is selfish, obviously, if she weren't she wouldnt have accepted and let the vp position go to someone more qualified. Oh but now atleast all of America knows her and shes famous, so thats good (for her)

Richard Hayden, it sounds like you have a serious abandonment issue. Go see a shrink. Seriously...you feel abandoned by your governor? Please! Get a life!

it is not abandonment or selfishness.
    it is a job/career promotion.
if you were offered a higher position & more pay than what you have now, could you? would you? turn it down.
please, people, w/ the cost of living today one cannot afford to turn down such an offer.

Why not just look at the history of our US Vice-Presidents? Did Cheney, Gore or Quail bring benefits to their individual states? I know Cheney has only brought himself more wealth through "war profiteering." As far as I gather; the position of VP in this country doesn't do much, except wait. Gore was a pretty borish V.P and Quail was constantly making headlines for his spelling and speaking "flubs."

Hey Richard, are you really that clueless or is this the standard obama letter he wishes everyone to believe. If you really feel Palin has left you without your warm milk at night, a shrink might be the answer.

I also feel abandoned by our Governor. She has chosen to cater to billions so why worry about 600k. I didn't vote for her but held high hopes that she would turn things around and be all that she campained to be. NOT. She takes credit for every change that has happened even if she didn't lift a finger. She has a history of getting rid of anyone who won't pledge TOTAL allegence to her. She hides important details until forced to reveal and then backstrokes to cover up anything that isn't positive for her....OH, WAIT! I GUESS SHE IS A GOOD POLITICIAN after all.

I would rather have S. Palin at the federal level as the areas I agree with her (defense and economic) are more federal oriented while the areas I disagree with her on (religious and social) are more local/state oriented.

I am perfectly content to have her as the next V.P. and future President who can appoint a Sec. of Ed. with the advice and consent of the (Democratic) Senate; but I would never want her to be the Sec. of Ed. unless she was firmly dedicated to the federal issues of having objective and measurable educational standards while staying out of the various religious educational debates.

"I find it interesting that Sarah Palin would abandon the office of governor of Alaska just to become John McCain’s running mate." I find this statement laughable. If elected as Vice President Sarah Palin could help all Americans. By the way, she was "chosen" as a running mate. Not only is that an honor ~ I would have to believe that she may feel that is is also her duty.

I do not think Palin will ever abandon Alaska, I agree with woodman and believe she can still do a lot of good for Alaska if elected VP. Who in their right mind would turn down such an honor? Especially given that she is qualified, I'd not turn down a good promotion at my place of employment either. She's a small town gal from Alaska that has been nationally recognized for all the good she's done for our state, send back your $1200.00 if your that upset.

Let's see; everything she's done for Alaska. Vetoed funding for schools, senior citizens, medical facilities. Argued against teaching birth control to teens (We can see how well abstinence based "just say no" works). She resolves conflict by firing or filing charges against anyone who doesn't agree with her. Her view of constitutional liberty includes banning books that she doesn't think we ought to read. She claims to have taken a stand against the "old boy network" but isn't her attorney actually Ted Stevens' brother-in-law? Claims to be against congressional earmarks but hired a lobbbyist to bring the earmarked bacon home to Wasilla. Says she was against the "Bridge to Nowhere" but neglects to mention that she just was against building it, not against keeping the federal funding for it. The news media needs to refocus attention away from the suspicious pregnancy and to the documented deceptions and ridiculous judgment exercised by this right-wing extremist nut case.

When I was living in Anchorage, I lived on Government Hill about five blocks from Lisa Murkowski's house, and so I was in the state senate district she represented. When Frank Murkowski became governor, he appointed his daughter to replace him. "Oh great," I thought, "now I have a senator representing me that I didn't vote for, and neither did anybody else." I felt robbed of my civic voice. Of course, that left her seat vacant in the legislature, and someone else was appointed to fill her seat. "Oh great, " I thought, "now I have a US senator in Washington and a state senator in Juneau that I didn't vote for, and neither did anybody else." I felt robbed again of my civic voice. I wondered if there was anyone left who really represented my interests in government. Should Sarah Palin make it to the vice presidency, Alaska will be left with a replacement governor for which nobody voted. This is, I think, what Mr. Hayden means by his use of the word "abandonment." Elected officials run for office saying they will speak for their constituency (and they do to some degree more or less). But when they leave that post at an unexpected time, it leaves those they serve or those who have supported them a bit less happy about it.

This argument, claiming abandonment of an elected official, is just one more strand of spaghetti being thrown against the wall, to see what will stick. Of course, Democrats are not only free to leave previous elected office, they are encouraged. Republicans being held to a different standard, it is abandonment of the voters.

Once again, we get to see which side of American politics is filled with racism, bigotry, sexism, and ageism. The Democratic Party's true colors are on display for the whole country to appreciate in this entire affair, just as they were during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearing. Amazingly, Sen Biden was a key player in that drama also, attempting to sully and destroy a man's character, his integrity, his spirit, and his family. Now we see Obama, Biden, and cohorts use every evil tool in their bag to character assassinate Gov Palin, and destroy her family.

If I were still a Democrat, as I was 10 years ago, I would be ashamed of my affiliation with such hateful leaders.

"...Alaska will be left with a replacement governor for which nobody voted."

You seem to forget that Parnell beat Jerry Ward in the 2006 Republican Primary election, receiving 52% of the vote. To say nobody voted for Parnell is not exactly true.

There is an ever-diminishing chance that Parnell will vie for a House seat in November. Should he win, what then?
