Biden says he looks forward to debate with Palin
Published Sunday, September 7, 2008
WASHINGTON -- Democrat Joe Biden says he's debated "an awful lot of tough, smart women" throughout his career and that next month's vice presidential debate with Republican Sarah Palin will be no exception. But he'd like to know where she stands on issues.
"She's a smart, tough politician, so I think she's going to be very formidable," Biden told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.
The Democratic senator from Delaware and the Republican governor of Alaska are scheduled to debate Oct. 2 at Washington University in St. Louis.
Biden, serving his sixth term in Congress, said "there's a lot of very tough, smart women in the United States Senate I debate every day." So going up against the first-term governor, he said: "It's not new." He also mentioned his wife, Jill, who has a Ph.D.
Asked whether he'd debate Palin differently than he would Republicans Mitt Romney or Tom Ridge, two former governors who figured into speculation about John McCain's running mate, Biden said the only difference is that he knows their positions on issues.
"I have no idea what her policies are. I assume they're the same as John's. I just don't know," he said of Palin.
Biden said she delivered a great speech to the Republican National Convention last week in St. Paul, Minn., but "her silence on the issues was deafening.
"She didn't mention a word about health care, a word about the environment, a word about the middle class. They never parted her lips ... so I don't know where she is on those things."

Why is it Democrats think that a man or woman has to be highly educated in order to be smart. Joe, so what if your wife has a PH.D, what differences does this make.
There are millions of everyday Americans, some who never graduated from high school; who are doing a better job of living with in their means, living a value based life, respecting each person, and proud to be an American. Doing it much better then many of those in the Congress.
Well Biden will surely know where Palin stands on issues when they debate.

Not knowing her stance on issues before the debate is probably just 'eating' at Biden. How can he prepare his 'attack' when he has nothing to 'quote her on'?
In my nind Sarah has won the debate before it has begun. Joe Biden has a 35 year history of doing one counter-productive thing after another during his years as a Senator. He has voted NO on everthing for Alaska and proven beyond a doubt how much he loves only himself. He and his partner Obama are truly a pair of zero's----
charliebussell you got that right! Sarah will pound Joe about all his screw-ups > http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-100241...

Wow! Joe, this is not in the Senate, this on TV with millions of smart women, watching! God Bless America!
palin will most likely bomb the debate
Why do we want smart, educated people running this country? Look what happened these last seven years. And that is from a fellow with an Ivy League education that got through due to bloodlines. I want someone smarter than me running this country, and a formal education can't hurt, only help. I don't plan on having a beer with the president or watching kids play hockey with the vice, and I want someone that will do more than spew party-line divisive crapola. Biden is hands-down better than Palin, and Obama is over McNuggets. You like where we are now (Iran, Iraq, economy, healthcare, mortgage, etc.), keep the same idiots in power. You don't, vote for some brains and common sense for once. POW, Troopergate, banned books, fetus-power, oil company kiss-ups, climate-change deniers...enough!
Morpheus! Just from reading your rant, I see you're getting what you want, Sara Palin already appears smarter than you.
Granted, she hasn't been in the Senate since 1972, like Biden. But she has more executive experience than he has. Maybe he can get a few pointers from his running mate about running a business/city/state/country? Oh yea, Obama hasn't any experience with that either.
He might get more points on the "dirty trick-spin-while talking out both sides of your mouth" scale. But I'm sure she'll get more points on the "honest, common-sense, not corrupt, connect with the regular American" meter.
"...Ivy League education that got through due to bloodlines..."
Just curious as to what you think of affirmative action, Morpheus.
Not saying I disagree with the point, but plenty of other "smart" folk didn't/don't get through college solely on merit...
It still amazes me that "Alaskans" seem the first to doubt how Sarah will do. How about giving her the benefit of the doubt? And akegg, have you ever seen Sarah speak? I have, in person and she is well spoken and will do very well, thank you.
After hearing the posturing of Morpheus I think I will wait to hear what she has to say at the debate instead of thorizing how she will do. Sounds like even Joe was smart enough to figure that one out.
Senator Biden, the arrogant admitted plagiarist Democratic party hack who knows only how to be wrong when it comes to foreign policy, will have some kind of family emergency before the debate, and Obama will have to replace him, probably with a woman, maybe Hillary.
That could happen. If the Democrats wanted to win.
And Morpheus, I think that you'll be safe voting, knowing that all the candidates would meet your threshold.
BigMike: well her speech DID suck.
FreeDarfur: Read more closely next time. The article merely points out his wife has a PhD...Biden did NOT mention it, the article does. He's saying he debates his wife a lot...like most intelligent husbands.
charliebussell: so don't listen to the debates. you already know biden has tons of experience and palin has zero but that doesn't bother you because she has a big R before her name.
LifeLongAlaskan: What are you talking about?? Everyone in Alaska is fawning over Palin as if she's the second coming. A few of us are still allowed to have dissenting opinions. Go join your herd.
Junestag - Just like everyone in Chicago is fawning over Obama?! I think it is a nice change to hear about Palin after having to listen to the last 6 months of nothing but Democrats, Clinton, and Obama. Thank God there is someone else to talk about now. And at least her speech was not a huge production complete with fireworks and pillars given by an ELITIST who cares only about himself. Ummm, ummm, ummmm...Yeah, Obama, GREAT speech! MCCAIN/PALIN 2008:)
Palin took at least 48 hours to review and practice a speech someone else wrote for her. Where was she the first couple days of the convention? Hiding? I've heard she cries when upset, so I hope she brings some tissues to the debate. Biden will expose her inexpereince and lack of knowledge easily. 20 months as Gov of AK vrs 35 years in the Senate? Oh yeah, that pta and wasilla mayor experience will help a lot.
It's amazing how worried republicans are of a Senate, Congress, and the President all being Democrat. I'm sure your world will come to an end next January. The last 6 times unemployment was this high, the incumbent party lost the white house 5 out of 6 times. So you better hope on that 1 in 6 chance it doesn't. Add the high cost of fuel, oil, and food and the chances go even lower. American Woman are much smarter then McCain can imagine. We shall see.
Go Obama/Biden 2008
DrillANWR: yes like the people fawning over obama in chicago...it's annoying in both cases. people need to think for themselves. just because a politician is FROM a particular place doesn't mean we should automatically think they are the bees knees, unless of course we are morons.
HilgeinAK - Oh, Republicans aren't worried. I think it is the Democrats who are worried. Why would the world come to an end in January? I think it will be a great January morning when McCain and Palin are sworn in:) Oh yeah, in case you didn't know, Obama's speech was written for him as well. I doubt Palin will be crying at her debate and she will bring her tissues for Biden who will need them. 35 years in the Senate doing what exactly? Ummmm....ummmmm...uhhhhh... Go McCain/Palin 08:)
hilgeinak---
By your logic, Sen McCain beats Sen Obama by about 34 years of experience.
Do you know how long Sen Obama practices his speeches, usually written by Axelrod? That's what politicians do. They rehearse speeches, then whisper in your ear.
I'm confident that Gov Palin will hold her own against the arrogant plagiarist, Joe Biden. He's been on the wrong side of our foreign policy for more than 30 years. His record on the Judiciary Committee shows his complete lack of respect for the other 2 branches of government. All he knows of executive decisions, is how to belittle them and undermine them. The Governor has shown the ability to make them, and stand by them.
glacierles - I think the opposite is true. Palin will crumble under the pressure of a debate with Biden.
And Obama has already shown he has the vision and the experience to lead this country in a new direction, whereas the adulterer McCain will just give us more of Bush & Co.
glacierles - Joe Biden was only accused of plagiarism, which he never admitted and later proved he hadn't.
John McCain, on the other hand, is an adulterer and Sarah Palin is the queen of earmarks.
Jesus Christ was a community organizer, Pontius Pilate was a Governor.
