Nanooks seek Classic title tonight

Published Saturday, September 6, 2008

FAIRBANKS — The Alaska Nanooks will play for the 10th Auto Service Company Nanook Classic title tonight at 8 at the Patty Center.

Alaska comes into the match against Ashland University with a 2-0 tournament record after defeating Catawba College in four tough games Friday night and dispatching St. Cloud State 25-19, 25-23, 25-15 this morning.

In the St. Cloud State match, the Nanooks were in control the whole way, though the Huskies put up a battle, particularly in the second set. Nanook middle hitter Korlyn Bolster led the team with 17 kills, while Jessica Hill chipped in 10 and freshman Simone Chavous added nine. Junior Megan Thigpen, normally an outside hitter, played almost exclusively in the back row due to an apparent Achilles tendon injury and collected 14 digs.

The Alaska-Ashland match will be preceded at 6 p.m. with a contest between Catawba (3-3) and St. Cloud State (1-5).

Catawba handled No. 23 Ashland (3-3) with surprising ease, 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 early this afternoon.

Catawba and Ashland, both 1-1 in the tournament, are still alive for the title but would need Alaska to lose for a chance to win a tiebreaker and the championship.

Alaska (3-1) has won the Nanook Classic just once, in 2000, when the tourney included NCAA Division I competition. Since the Classic switched to a Division II format in 2006, the Nanooks have yet to break through.

    Hey.....Go Lady Nook Spikers!
    Been liking what I see......
Always giving love to the veteran players, "Megan Thig", "Lex" Korlyn, Hannah, J-Hill, Erica and the Crew.....but sophomore Melissa Refuerzo and the freshman Simone Chavous have been playing very well so far as well.
    Keep doing what you do.........
