Sarah Palin
Presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., announced that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was his choice as vice presidential running mate on Friday, Aug. 29, 2008.
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Sarah Palin delivered.
An embattled vice presidential candidate, a novice on the national stage, the head of a family suffering its "ups and downs," the first-term Alaska governor rocked the GOP convention with a star-turning performance.
Wielding a stiletto and a smile, Palin belittled Democrat Barack Obama and praised her new boss, John McCain, jolting the crowd of GOP partisans.
"Don't you think we made the right choice for the next vice president of the United States!" McCain said, hinting the controversy surrounding his pick. "And what a beautiful family."
Indeed, the family was on display for the TV cameras — five children, including a 17-year-old unmarried daughter who is pregnant. Their mother lacked the soaring oratory skills of Obama — a man she attacked as a tax-raising, terrorist-coddling, self-indulgent liberal. But the former TV sportscaster spoke in calm, TV-friendly tones reminiscent of Ronald Reagan. Like the former GOP president, Palin warmed the crowd with quips and jokes.
"What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull," she said, pausing for a beat and a smirk. "Lipstick."
She left the crowd smiling.
"For too many times, we've brought knives to gun fights," said Chuck Gast, a delegate from Maryland,
When asked if Palin brought a gun to the fight, Gast said: "Yes, I think she brings a big gun, like a moose gun."
It was the crowning moment of a roller-coaster week in which the first woman ever on a Republican presidential ticket has faced questions about how closely the McCain campaign scrutinized her. She also has heard a wide range of inquiries about family issues, her policy positions and her record of public service.
"Our family," she said, "has the same ups and downs as any other."
One speech does not a campaign make. Kept at arm's length from the media in the days leading up to the address, Palin now heads out on the campaign trail, where events are less rehearsed, crowds less friendly and the environment less controlled. Even as she spoke, airplanes in Alaska were unloading reporters and political operatives sent to pore through her personal and public life.
A big test comes at the Oct. 2 vice presidential debate with her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden.
But tonight was hers.
Facing down her critics with smiling resolve, Palin took crowd-delighting swipes at Obama and what she called the Washington elite. "Here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion. I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country," she said.
A new celebrity herself, Palin cast Obama as a little more than a fancy speaker with a compelling biography.
"The American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of 'personal discovery.' This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn't just need an organizer," Palin said, a clear reference to Obama's time as a community organizer in Chicago.
The Obama campaign had less than a warm greeting, saying Palin's speech was "written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years." The speech was written by Matthew Scully, who met Palin for the first time last week.
Selected by McCain only last Friday, Palin addressed the convention amid questions about her qualifications and relative lack of experience.
The first-term governor had top billing at the convention on a night delegates also lined up for a noisy roll call of the states to deliver their presidential nomination to McCain.
Watching her speech were her husband Todd and their children, including daughter Bristol Palin, whom the Palins disclosed earlier in the week was five months pregnant. Bristol's 18-year-old boyfriend and apparent fiance, Levi Johnston, was seated with them.
McCain shook up the presidential race by picking Palin, a little-known governor less than two years in office. Since then, a bright spotlight has been trained on the life and record of the Republican governor who has bucked the state's political establishment.
Days after Palin made her debut on the national stage with McCain, the campaign announced her unmarried daughter's pregnancy. Other disclosures followed, including that a private attorney is authorized to spend $95,000 of state money to defend her against accusations of abuse of power and that Palin sought pork-barrel projects for her city and state, contrary to her reformist image.
"Our family has the same ups and downs as any other ... the same challenges and the same joys," she said.
Noting that the couple's oldest son, Track, 19, was shipping out to Iraq in eight days with the Army infantry, Palin praised McCain as "a true profile in courage, and people like that are hard to come by."
"He's a man who wore the uniform of this country for 22 years, and refused to break faith with those troops in Iraq who have now brought victory within sight. And as the mother of one of those troops, that is exactly the kind of man I want as commander in chief," she said.
Largely unknown outside her home state, Palin told the convention: "I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids' public education better," she said, speaking of her home town of Wasilla, Alaska, with a population of about 6,500.
"When I ran for city council, I didn't need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too," she said.
Before becoming governor, Palin served as mayor of Wasilla, she recounted, adding: "And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities."
Palin delivered her speech in a firm, cheerful voice. It was her first chance to introduce and define herself to the American public and, after it was done, her family joined her on stage. She cuddled her 4-month-old son, Trig, and waved at the adoring crowd like the beauty pageant contestant she once was.

She hasn't even spoke yet.. UGH! DNM could have AT LEAST waited until the Governor has spoken versus taking the pre-released comments, and the stating"she said" etc...
actually i believe she has as it is nearly 9 pm where she is right now.
Wonder if she'll announce when the up and coming shotgun wedding will be?
dog
Wait, she's not in Alaska preparing for winter and the high costs of heating and eating?
dracon....I'm afraid she's busy getting direct messages from Heaven as regards our "task in Iraq" and how we should be drilling the hel....uh....heck out of ANWR. When you are getting messages directly from God the way Sarah seems to be doing you can't be expected to waste your time on such mundance things as winter and costs of heating and eating.
Oops...nearly forgot the earmarks. She's also extremely busy working on getting as many earmarks as she can for Alaska from Congress, according to her comments on the issue. Hmmm...but McCain has said if he gains the presidency he will veto any earmarks that come across his desk. Seems to be a bit of a disparity there between the two. Ah, well....I guess that's part of her "maverick" spirit to follow the GOP precedent Don Young and Ted Stevens have set so well while differing from her partner in this presidential race. After all, we're talking money here and if she's quite willing to sell Alaska to the highest development bidder it shouldn't be surprising she would try to grab all the federal money she can in, mind you, a "maverick" way.
I hope everyone noticed the teleprompter! Even underlined the important words for her ;-)
I have no intention of voting McCain/Palin but she did what needed to be done! Still hope they don't win but definitely think she's doing what Senator McCain couldn't have done on his own. Good political move, his choosing Gov. Palin.
HybridAlaskan...wouldn't be getting that excited to soon if I were you...election's not here yet. Might find yourself eating a piece of humble pie...ha ha ha
It's amazing how many lies she's telling about Obama. For one thing, he DOES have major legislation to his name on ethics reform and other important issues... she lied and said he doesn't. But her tax nonsense is especially nasty. 95% of all Americans will have lower taxes under Barack Obama than under John McCain. He's got a very big middle-class tax cut in his plan, and John McCain only offers tax breaks for people who can't remember how many houses they own. She's embarrassing Alaska by lying, lying, lying. I had no idea our governor was such a dishonest weasel.
McCain and Palin are just completely devoid of new ideas. Their idea of policy is to keep doing what Bush is doing, drill a little more, and call it "reform." They haven't mentioned anything they'll do that Bush hasn't been doing for the last 8 years. Not one single thing. Instead, they spend all their stage time lying about what the Democrats are planning to do.
Obama's full of great, new ideas, and he gives specifics, and he talks about his ideas more than about his opponents. That's the kind of leadership we need.
HybridAlaskan, what other species are you a hybrid with? My guess is half-human, half-hare. Please let your other half take over for the rest of the night, and go stand in the middle of the Richardson staring blankly at oncoming cars...
Well, the speech is over. She didn't really do anything to satisfy the concerns people have about her ability to be President. There was nothing insightful in her speech, nothing that shows a coherent vision or any real knowledge of national issues. It was just a series of canned applause lines based on the same boring, dishonest talking points the Republicans have been using for a year already. She looked like a Miss America contestant standing up there telling everyone how much she wants World Peace, only with "World Peace" replaced by "More Drilling" Mad-libs-style.
Ah, c'mon - she did what every other speaker at each convention did - rhetoric, rhetoric, rhetoric. And she did it well, as did Senator Obama, as did Fred Thompson.
Neither convention, and none of the speakers, impressed me at all. They're all performing and doing it well. Woo hoo.
Hi Hybrid.
I'm having dinner with my good friend Allan. I notice we see "you" tonight. You've decided to use your own name, not mine tonight, huh?
Speaking of no substance, your posts sound a lot like Palin's speech. Which one of you is dumber?
I did notice the teleprompter, Christina. Setec, would you like to join us for dinner?
For some reason the RNC and it's theme seemed dull and lame. The DNC was more exciting and provided a ton of truths some of which I havent though of much. Palin has no right to criticise Obama's NATIONAL and INTERNATIONAL experience. Palin has zero of both, Mccain may have the same senatorial experience as Obama but all democrats have already agreed we dont want another president like Bush. The republican ticket has no structural support, if great grandpa Mccain decides to drop dead what is Palin gonna do? Palin will need to show us she is ready to take on other countries and take command of millions of lives. I have no problem with the democratic ticket because it is perfect while half of the country said what the... just hours after Mccain's nomination for Palin.
Even NPR had to admit that she did a very good job. Called her the new voice of Ronald Regan. I bet Obama is kicking himself for not picking Hilary and Hilary and Bill have finally come together for a good laugh. Gee Sarah may have put a spark in their marriage. Eat your heart out Democrats, middle American has found a voice.
Setec-although I think Sen. Obama would be a breath of fresh air in the white house, he has not in fact authored any significant legislation. He has voted for and against ethics and campaign reform. Curiously enough he did vote against the Dems and with the Reps sponsored ethics bill. He also voted against campaign reform and against a bill that would have eliminated $100,000.00 in taxpayer dollar support from both conventions. In addition he has been absent for almost half the roll calls since he was elected. As much as I like him, there are a number of significant differences between his spoken public record and reality. Not thrilled with McCain either and while I will be on the losing end I picking none of the above.
Hybrid--with friends like you, the Republicans don't need enemies.
It seems that Palin pulled off the show tonight, by doing a great job!
Surly she'll put every Rep. running in Alaska into office as folks will
pull the straight Rep.ticket handle!
She will pull the Rep. Party together on a national basis, as well.
Good job, well done, etc. etc.
Icerider, you've been listening to Republican talking points about Obama's record. In reality he's put a lot more accomplishments under his belt than most Senators have since 2004, and he was exceptionally accomplished in Illinois as well. This blog post summarizes his legislative record as well as anything I've seen:
http://obsidianwings.blogs.com/obsidian_...
When you listen to both sides' negative talking points and don't look into the positives, you're bound to conclude that they're all a bunch of crooks and vote third party every time. That's a mistake this time around. When you look past all the dishonest Republican smears about both his character and his record, it turns out Obama's really just the kind of person we want as President.
He's even the kind of person a lot of Republicans want as President... they just don't all realize it yet. He's going to lower taxes, encourage personal responsibility, and make government less wasteful, and he's an incredible patriot and devoted family man. The Republican party has been trying to hide these facts behind stupid smears so their voters don't realize what a great choice he is.
You may not vote for him, but when he wins and he's been in office for a while I bet you'll wish you had.
Well, there we have it...her speech has just ended and all those old white folks are just beside themselves with pride. They're being prompted to do standing ovations. They gave one to her doofus husband, and to her parents. They panned in really closely on little Piper smoothing baby Trig's hair with her just-licked hand. Oh, and now she's got a true calling, a mission: She will advocate for families with special-needs children. Good for her. Very nice.
She is lovely. She is funny. She is direct and directed. She has served well as the pretty hockey mom/pit bull/barracuda.
Mostly, what she did was attack Obama, make fun of him the way smart-ass McLame does. Ridiculing community organizers the way dumbass Guiliani did. Who the hell do they think get the REAL middle-class into the mainstream, into the jobs and the offices and back into school and out to VOTE? She unfortunately came across as having a strong mocking tone, feminized and wrapped in pink.
Yes, they totally LOVED her.
However, she didn't present much in the way of "new" ideas, or of any detailed plan that will "one-up" Barack. That is what it's all about at this point.
She talked about the wonderfulness of family centered challenges. She talked about how wonderful it is to live in a small town. She couldn't have been cuter. Or more congenial.
She certainly is a big supporter of the "war". She certainly has the same stupid idea that there is something for the American people to win from the occupation of Iraq. She certainly had no problem bringing attention to her blushing, obviously uncomfortable son that is leaving for Iraq soon. Leave the kids alone? That sickens me. She lied about the things that Barack intends to do when he becomes POTUS. She lied about having been a supporter of the bridge to nowhere. She told those ministry students that the Iraq war has something to do with God. So....a Christian jihad? Oh. No. It's called a Crusade when the Christians do it.
THAT is friggin' SCARY AS HELL.
Now we'll wait for that mean, nasty, lying little man to come on stage and spew more mockeries, more digs and smart-assed cracks against his opponent, all the while knowing, as we do, that he's full of crap, that nothing will really change, and that war mongering will continue to be the path that our administration continues.
I just cannot wait for the debates. No prompters. No words written for them. Barack and Joe will embarass them.
Forget "talking points" everyone is going to paint their pick in the most positive light! The best thing to do is look at the record yourself, it doesn't take too long- I did it in no time! Make sure to take a good look at the bills wording so you know exactly what was yea'ed and nay'ed.

The best way to vote is to educate yourself, not let others with all the best intentions educate you.
--------
taking the path of least resistance makes both men and rivers crooked.
For the Republicans and McCain to say 'family is off limits,' they sure did shuffle that baby around for photo ops and promptly paraded the whole Palin clan around on stage, even the knocked-up chick's baby daddy. Long live Republican hypocrisy.
Here is McCain's record. This sight is actually easier to use, one could look at Obama's here as well.

Here is another interesting page:

Go forth and educate yourself!
Setec-My information comes from the congressional record, not a websight which may or may not be objective in nature. I support neither the dems or reps, as I stated clearly in my previous post, subsequently I pay no attention to either ones campaign retoric. I know you beleive in your canidate, but you like so many others, are guilty of only listening to one side. Just because your side said it does'nt make it right. My research on the canidates involve actually neutral sources, such as the congressional record. I'm sorry but being absent for 45.5% of the congressional votes does not make for a good canidate for any public office, much less president. As I said before I like the man, I like his ideas, but his actual congressional record shows, that he is no different than anyone else on the hill.
I thought McCain was going to keep this a Gentleman's game? I guess.. the women weren't included.
She did great ! This changes the face of Alaska in D.C. for the better and we're fortunate to have her representing Alaska and this country. I don't agree with everything she's ever done but they have my vote and I think the majority of USA's. I want to know who the 5 Alaskan delegates are that did not vote for her in St. Paul however... very conspicuous as the only republican delegates not casting votes for McCain out of the 1190 necessary to be officially nominated..
Don't know who this "HybridAlaskan" person is, as some of you do seem to know. I'm guessing, though, that he/she has some kind of mental disorder, a subject I do not take lightly. If someone knows him/her personally, please look out after this person and try and get him/her the proper treatment. Disorders such as bipolar can be easily managed as long as one commits to staying on the medications. Best of luck.
Are you drunk?
Dermot Cole says, "dang".
Very interesting Grover. I see that Obama has not voted almost 25% of the time he's been in Congress to McCain's 18%. What do we pay these guys for? Turns out that Don Young is one of the most successfull bill writers in the House. Who'da thunkit?
How embarrassing for Alaskans. Palin enters the Washington insider world and is told what to say by the Rove Boys. I can't think of a lower moment in Alaska history. Imagine Alaska's best governor ever, Jay Hammond, stooping this low. Would never happen. This feels dirty.
And again I ask, who the heck is looking out for us while the top dogs are kissing hinnies back East?
Speech was better when Goebbels gave it in the original German.
Let's see, WaPo front page tomorrow is about her emails putting the lie to her claims on troopergate; ADN leads with fact she was never involved in a single Alaska National Guard decision; Enquirer's Edwards team on site in Alaska promises more revelations that will 'bring the governor down' in coming days...
But hey she read Rove's speech just like a TV Broadcaster should so she's the GOP's Paris Hilton for the night!
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/votes.xp...
Statistics: Barack Obama has sponsored 136 bills since Jan 4, 2005, of which 122 haven't made it out of committee and 2 were successfully enacted.
She's photogenic. It was all that was needed.
I'm starting to think maybe the GOP is purposely throwing this election.
SPINSPINSPINSPINSPIN!!!!
Please do. Right out into traffic. Right into the river.
Shut the hell up. You are nothing but obnoxious.
What an absolutely pathetic display of Republican scum. We've heard her talk more in the past 2 days than we have in the past 2 years and she is an utter waste of political space. She singlehandedly threw Alaskans under the bus in her speech and will now be completely ineffective when she returns to Alaska after the great defeat in November. Geezer and Gidget...what a ticket.
I can't believe we voted this opportunist into office...what the h-e-double hockey (no pun intended) sticks were we thinking?!? I hope Frank Murkowski is sitting on his yacht in the Carribbean laughing his a** off!
Icerider, my "partisan source" doesn't lie. Sure, there's some reasonable opinion mixed in, but the bottom line is that it highlights several key pieces of Obama legislation. They're in the congressional record, too. They exist. You were contending based on your examination of the record that he hasn't been behind any major legislation, but he has. I don't understand which part of that you're actually disagreeing with. Do you disagree on what's considered major legislation? Or on the fact that Obama sponsored the bills being claimed?
Also, being present for 45.5% of votes during the campaign for President just isn't a problem at all. Fighting for the future executive direction of this country is a lot more important than showing up for inconsequential votes, meaning those that are either bound to pass or fail by large margins anyway and those concerning irrelevant junk like creating a National Clown Day or something. Obama has been there and voted on every really important piece of legislation for which his vote was even remotely likely to be needed to determine the outcome. His campaign for President isn't just about his own career, it's about whether the ambitious plans of the Democratic congress for the next 4 to 8 years will succeed under his leadership or be vetoed by John McCain. It's completely appropriate to make the future success of major legislation a higher priority than voting on every trivial thing that passes through the current Senate.
Hey Sarah. The job is in Juneau. Want another job? Leave this one first.
A national poll showed that the majority of Americans gave Palin a thumbs down for her speech. I guess we can't expect straightforward, unbiased reporting from the News Minus.
Prospector, your number that claims Obama only sponsored 2 bills that became law only includes bills for which he was the only sponsor. You forget that his work with Dick Lugar on nuclear non-proliferation, with Tom Coburn on ethics reform, and other major accomplishments were done with Republican co-sponsors, because Obama does things in a bi-partisan way.
Here's a little light reading for the Palin haters and Obama camp. Add this to Rev. Wright and I start to think the only reason Obama would wave the flag would be to fan the flames.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/020...
You might need to pull out the old compass and start trying to figure out which way Mecca is. Best of luck.
Palin's speech sucked, not only did it suck but she didnt even write it. Come on national republicans, you can come up with something better...
Jeez...I didn't know we had so many professionals on this forum! It amazes me how many Monday morning quarterbacks there are out there. I am sure everyone could do SO MUCH BETTER since they know so much about politics, speeches, foreign policy and the war in Iraq. I think Palin did an outstanding job and she is definitely the golden ticket. I don't know how anyone could vote for Obama. He is not the answer people and you have no idea how dangerous he is... MCCAIN/PALIN 2008! It's in the bag!
I love the fact that the Obama campaign and the bleeding hearts are shaking in their elitist shoes. I can't wait for the debate. Palin will eat Biden alive! Ha ha ha ha!!!!
How will that be possible, DrillANWR? Palin has virtually ZERO knowledge about foreign affairs and Biden is an expert on the subject. He has also crafted crime and drug legislation, as well as in other topics. No amount of prepping Sarah for the debates will help her against Joe Biden. Sorry!
Setec-Regardless of what you believe, it is a partisan source. The facts are the facts, being a cosposor does not count toward policy development since it can be accomplished by a phone call without any actual input in the legislative process. I'm sorry but no matter where you look or how much you believe, he has just not done the work you give him credit for. Most of the legislation that he touts as acheivements were rejected by his own party, rewritten and submitted under different sponsors. The ethics legislation everyone credits him with passsing was actually sponsored by the reps. I am also sorry but given the current state of the union should demand 100% participation by every member of congress whether they are running for president or not. An absentee senator could easily become an absentee president during the next election. You touched on the real problem with the nation, yes the president has the power to veto congressional bills, but congess can also pass those bills without presidential approval. If 2/3rds of congress does not believe in the validity of a bill then perhaps it should not become law. While I don't think much of our current president, the democratic congress has had three years to fix it and has done nothing. Please don't blame it on the presidential veto power. The Dems let it go to position itself for this election. They have had three budgets to fix it and haven't. It is doubtful that you will here anything I have said, but I feel better for saying it. It is time to look past two party politics and elect people willing to fight for the people, not their own agenda. Regardless of who is elected president until we hold congress accountable for their actions we are in for four more years of the same old thing. New channel, same old reruns.
Guess what you pinko, obama sheep who call yourselves Alaskans. The great state of Alaska's electoral votes will, without a doubt, go to McCain and Palin. So in essence your vote, or opinion for that matter won't mean squat no matter what the outcome is in November!!!! What a waste of time you sheeple are, I just laugh at you.
Great Video coverage @:www. impalin.com
I watched Sarah Louise Palin with pride. She is the perfect Vice Presidential candidate for this election cycle; Heck, she is head and shoulders better than either of the cookie-cutter Marxists on the Democrat Party Ticket.
It is very telling that even the uber Socialists on the electronic media appear to be stumble-bumbling all over themselves in a confused stupor since they are acutely aware that EVERYONE who is honest saw that Sarah Louise Palin hit a Grand Slam Home Run Tonight!!!
The Chicago Mud Slinging Political Machine [that keeps enough ostensible "DISTANCE" from Barack Hussein Obama to afford that scum sucker "Plausible deniability" of having any connection with the evil liars and mud slingers] is now confused as to how to re-launch their unjustifiable and heretofore carefully calculated attack on Sarah Louise Palin.
One has to love the honesty and integrity of Sarah Louise Palin and the Republican Presidential Candidate, John Sydney McCain. The Democrat Marxist (I know I am being redundant again) Machine is reeling.
God has Blessed Sarah Louise Palin with the skill and integrity to deliver a beautiful speech tonight. Well done Sarah !!!!
A whole lot of outside whiners have posted Marxist garbage here. Oh well the First Amendment protects their right to say stupid things too. Gotta love it!
Setec-just so you know your bipartisan canidate has voted with the Dems slightly over 96% of the time, so he doesn't cross the isle very often. In addition he was cosponsor on Reps bills, not vice versa.
P.S. I am not against Sen. Obama, nor am I for Sen. McCain. I have done more research into the canidates this election than ever before. I was not happy with what I found out about either canidate, so now I'm encouraging others to look elswhere. I'm not trying to point to any one in particular, I'm just saying, look at all the canidates.
haha - cute Andrew. Glad you've finally started using middle names other than Sen Obama's. I'm clearly making an impact on you!
*Hugs*
Other than the Fuel oil bills; Nov. can't get here soon enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sigh........................
I just want to be sure that they all equally show their persona, as identified by their personal monikers; i.e. their names:
John Sydney McCain & Sarah Louise Palin
Barack Hussein Obama & Joseph Robinette Biden.
(I did not make any of those names up.... )
See; It does not hurt to speak the truth out loud. The electorate has a right to be educated since not all voters are political junkies.
I notice you left out HillAry's in another comment section.
But good effort so far! It's nice that you've abandoned the practice of only using Sen. Obama's...it was starting to make you look biased ;)
No offense but Joe Biden has a WUSSY middle name. "Robinette" LOL
Although I have to say, I'm still mystified as to how one's middle name - not chosen by oneself, but by one's parents - is indicative of their "persona".
Of course, I, Christina Elizabeth Uticone may very well be an ax murderess and/or vampiress...
One never knows! Curses on my parents for revealing my true persona before I ever had one! :)
Much of my favorite jewelry came from Robinette Jewelers, in Seneca Falls, NY (my hometown)...so I don't associate "Robinette" with "wussy" but with "wonderful presents". :-)
Hillary is now a non-issue, thanks to the Marxist supporting anti-Clinton media. I wonder how much it cost Mr. Soros to "obtain" that kind of media "response". Humm....
I guess the fact that the actions of the Media disenfranchised millions of Democrat women was not a problem; They calculated that the Democrat woman would be led by the nose and would still vote Democrat; Sounds like the Democrat Leadership treated the Hillary Voters like peons. Sad.
Hillary Rodham Clinton is her denigrated (by the Democrat Leadership) name. Sad for the Democrat Ladies.
LOL
Andrew, I positively live for your comments! They are fabulous. You have completely made me forget about my old flame, KSFlatlander. :)
I certainly don't feel disenfranchised without Hillary on the ticket. 'Course, I am originally from NY.
"Their mother lacked the soaring oratory skills of Obama" - BS! Obama can't even put two sentences together w/o his speech writers and ghost writers! Setec you need to wake up from your dream world! Are you also clinging to your religion these days - you'll need it. Please when McCain & Palin take office...please move out of AK. Obama has done nothing for Illionis - I have relatives there who think he is a moron plus he's never voted on anything in the last year or so - too busy campaigning on no experience, no leadership, racist wife and half brothers who are committing genocide in their own countries...and who are ashamed of their white brother, obama. And Biden is a known, proven liar and now appears to be drinking himself across the country! Oh, yeah just what we need another drunk accidently shooting his peers...at least Palin can aim! And hit her targets well! Go Sarah!
Dermont Cole & Mayor Jim should take a vacation to Mexico, until Nov.5 !!!!!
If it wasn't for Obama's stance on gun issues...I might have actually considered him for a few minutes. I'd like some change too. But seeing as how he could so easily support taking away one constitutional right...how can we not be in fear for our other rights with the probability of Obama's screwing with those? Regardless of your personal opinions on guns in particular, this should be a giant red-flag for all Americans and there constitutional rights!
As to prompters being used....they've been used in both the DNC and RNC, as well as in majority of political speeches and/or addresses for years. Including underlined words and planned pauses...go figure. As well as having speech writers....pretty commonplace, as you should well know if you feel you are knowledgeable enough to even begin spouting your thoughts or opinions. It's fairly ignorant to try to use that as a critique of any of the speakers, whether Republican or Democrat.
Many seem to have strong opinions on Palins family being present. I thought it was a brave move. With so much controversy swirling around in regards to Gov. Palins daughter, they could have easily hidden them all away. But instead they showed a strong, united force that represents a real family. A family that has real people in it that make mistakes and a family that has chosen to remain solidly there for one another through good times and bad. Regardless of political affiliations and/or opinions, I respect her for that.
And please....aklibbylover...enlighten me with your apparent wisdom...how did Gov. Palin throw us under the bus? I did not hear nor see anything but appreciation and praise for the people of her state.
I am proud of our governor. Proud of who she is and what she has become! Shame on you folks for thinking she was exploiting her family! If she hadn't brought them out, then everyone would have been saying that she was trying to hide them, hide her daughter and her son.
If she would have said other things, then you would have bashed her on those as well. Why all the hate? Alaska is on the map thanks to our beautiful governor. One person from our great state has woken up the sleeping giant, and the Democrats are at a loss as what to say.
If I hear, "...voted 90% of the time with Pres. Bush..." or "heartbeat away from the Presidency", ugh! You have to admit that since last Friday, the Dems are in a state of shock, and are trying everything possible to make her look bad.
Liberal media is bad! This article was poorly written, and I'm ashamed to say that it was in the DNM. Really, a true Alaskan should have wrote an article without any bias. The last line of the article made me sick.
Hillary who? Mr. Briseno, you are awesome. Thank you for calming us down a little and bringing the issue of the article back to light...and thank you to those who provided real websites to view, not biased blogs...I look forward to the debates too and as soon as Sarah holds her own against good ol' boy Biden we'll go from there...thanks to all for an entertaining evening of reading!
Why are people insulting each other over how they will vote. It's sorta a given Alaska would vote Republican, even before the Governor was placed on the ticket.
I'm trying to understand how anyone in Alaska can call people "Pinkos", or Socialists when even McCain himself called Alaska a Welfare State because of both the PFD and because of the Federal dollars Senator Stevens brought in.
Imagine if we didn't have a PFD, or Federal dollars coming in.. then what? We'd be paying taxes, and have very little.
It's true... Alaska is full of people on "Welfare"... I mean all 600,000 of us. And most feel entitled to it.
So who's the REAL Pinko, the Real Socialist? if you don't like any of these "socialist" ideas, then turn down your PFD, the Bonus.. and state services.. and forget about Social Security, or anything else. Let's just cut out all services, public safety.. everything.
Palin hasn't delivered on ONE thing she promised, other than she's NOT Murkowski. Oh, she sold the jet... how much does she spend flying around commercially? How much will the various investigations costs the state when she's out on the Campaign Trail. Com one. that plane is it. She sold it. Big Whooped. The Gas Pipeline stuff happening in Tok is NOT caused by her.
Let her finish what she said she'd do up here. THEN, I'll say she's ready. A town of 5000 people, voted in by 900. That's nothing... that's how many kids are in a high school. Heck, UAF is bigger than Wasilla.
Everything has done has come back to bite her in the butt. That's how it works for everyone.
"Even as she spoke, airplanes in Alaska were unloading reporters and political operatives sent to pore through her personal and public life."
Pore???
I wonder if the writer meant pour or pore as in porous?
Also, my first comment (the first one on this thread, was written at 5:27 about an article that has since changed. Govenor Palin had not spoken yet as I was watching the events live on TV.
For the record I also watched the Democratic Convention.
On a particularly funny note, my wife and two kids (10 &12) all sat watching the speech and cringed when Sarah's youngest daighter was shown licking her hand and smoothing down baby Trig's hair. That moment will be remembered for a long time to come.
One other thought, I just told my wife, to me, as a father, I was especially proud of Governor Palin for showing my kids that you can be born into zero fame or fortune and rise all the way to the highest offices in the land. I honestly didn't think it was even possible any more.
Regardless of how this election turns out, I am proud of our country!
draconianslacker-it doesn't really matter what she does or does not due in the next four years, you will still find some excuse to disapprove of her. Even if she loses the election, returns to Alaska and does everything she's promised it will never be enough, because she is not part of the right party. But, if she changed parties tomorrow and became Sen. Obama's running mate she would suddenly become the greatest woman since Joan of Arc. The acceptance of a two party system by the american people is the real reason for our current dilema. Their are actually six canidates, check them all out then make an informed choice.
Steph_March, Obama is PRO-GUN, and everybody in Alaska needs to know that. The Republicans come around in EVERY election claiming the Democrats are going to take away your guns. The Democrat could be Yosemite Sam and the Republicans would claim he's going to take away your guns. They're just making it up. With Obama, they're waving around some no-name newsletter questionnaire that some uninformed staffer filled out for him fifteen years
