UAF students looking for software projects

Published Tuesday, October 14, 2008

University of Alaska Fairbanks computer science students are now accepting proposals for software design projects.

The projects allow students to gain real-world experience while local government, public service and private organizations gain customized software for free. Commercial custom software development projects, such as those done annually by UAF students, can cost as much as $40,000, according to a UAF press release.

Students have developed more than 59 successful projects in the last 20 years. Previous clients include Love INC, Fairbanks North Star Borough, the city of North Pole, Bureau of Land Management, Fairbanks Taxi, University of Alaska Museum of the North and the National Weather Service. Clients are partners in the educational process by working with students to clarify requirements and being involved in the evaluation of project outcomes.

The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Oct. 31. Requests can be submitted via e-mail to fycsci@uaf.edu or by regular mail to Department of Computer Science, University of Alaska Fairbanks, P.O. Box 756670, Fairbanks, 99775-6670. Phone inquiries can be made at 474-2777.

I sure remember doing this in the late 80s. Prof. Gatterdam has retired now, but he was our leader then. My team developed a fire crew assignment and tracking system for the US Forest Service. Another team worked on plotting the location of lightning strikes. We had a third secret team that worked on one of the "rejected" proposals, for the states' DOT. It was a fun time!
