Ice Dogs finally get revenge against Topeka

FAIRBANKS — The Fairbanks Ice Dogs finally got to show the Topeka RoadRunners some Big Dipper Ice Arena hospitality in a hot-tempered 4-2 win on Saturday night.
A night after getting outplayed in a three-goal defeat, the Ice Dogs jumped on undefeated Topeka for a pair of first-period goals, then put the game away with two more early in the third period.
And once the Ice Dogs were in command, the gloves came off during a seven-penalty skirmish that saw Micheal Bennett of the Ice Dogs and Ross Trousdale of the RoadRunners get ejected for fighting.
Ice Dogs (now 3-4-1) came into the two-game North American Hockey League series with revenge on their minds because the RoadRunners had eliminated them last season in a hard-fought South Division playoff finals that saw all five games played on Topeka’s home ice. On Friday, however, Topeka used three goals on special teams in a 4-1 win to spoil the Ice Dogs’ home opener.
Topeka had given up just 11 goals in its first seven games, but Saturday was a different story.
Joseph Krause got the fun underway at 3:56 of the first period on a goal assisted by Jon Schreiner and Jon Feaval. Then at 12:17, Steve Zierke made it 2-0 on a power-play score off helpers from Drew Darwitz and Michael Juola.
Topeka, last season’s NAHL runners-up who came into the game with a 7-0 record, shaved its deficit in half early in the second on a Colin Smith score.
But at 1:37 of the third period — 30 seconds after Schreiner and Topeka’s Jordan George received fighting misconduct penalties — Jared Larson of the Ice Dogs scored shorthanded with an assist going to Paul Kirtland.
Less than five minutes later, Randy Cure scored off an assist from Eric Kraft, and the celebration was well underway at the Big Dipper. A late score by George for Topeka did little to dampen the party in the biggest win for new Ice Dogs coach Josh Hauge.
The Ice Dogs are off until a series at Kenai River Oct. 23-25. They then return to the Patty Center 2 a three-game series against Wichita Falls beginning Oct. 29.

I got tot town this past week to see the kids, and we all got spoiled with a great ICE DOGS victory last night!. Congratualations to the team, and thanks for giving me the pleasure of watching my grandson (and all the other kids) have fun at his second game at the arena.
There have been some new players added to the roster lately. Where did they come from? Why weren't they here earlier? What players are still coming?
Ok Boss, you need to get your hockey jargon dictionary out.
There were no gloves dropped. The fights were after the whistle, and the dogs were defending Cook in goal. A RR player was slashing heavily at Cooks knees, several times. The whistle blew, and the RR player was pressed up on the boards, and fists were flying.
The term, "Gloves Off" or the like, is used when an official fight breaks out during play. Saturday's fights were unoficial.
