New Quest offices to open Dec. 5

Published Saturday, November 22, 2008

FAIRBANKS — The Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race in Fairbanks has a new headquarters and is inviting the public to celebrate with them.

The grand opening at the log cabin at 550 1st Ave. (formerly the Fairbanks Convention and Visitors Bureau) will be from 5-8 p.m. on Dec. 5. The building, which has a view of the Quest start/finish on the Chena River, will be the race’s Alaska headquarters and have a retail store and administrative offices.

Karen Austen, the 2009 Yukon Quest poster artist, will be present at the grand opening, which is part of the First Friday art event.

The Quest is also holding a pair of fundraisers. First up is the Hawaiian Luau tonight at 6 at the Chevrolet Cadillac of Fairbanks Showroom, 3300 Cushman St. On Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. will be the annual Hawg & Dog Wine Tasting & Auction at the Harley-Davidson Farthest North Outpost, 1450 Karen Way.

In other news, the Two Rivers Checkpoint (at Twin Bears Camp, Mile 30 of Chena Hot Springs Road) will replace Chena Hot Springs Resort as a 2009 checkpoint, Quest Fairbanks executive director Tania Simpson said.

CHSR was a checkpoint the previous two races. The change means mushers will have a substantially longer distance between the Mile 101 Checkpoint to the Two Rivers Checkpoint.

The 26th Yukon Quest starts Feb. 14 in Whitehorse, Yukon. Thirty-two mushers have signed up so far.

This is great news for the YQI. The log cabin is, by far and away, the single best building in Fairbanks for their offices!! I wish them the best, and hope that this year will not be anything like last year. For the old timers that are still involved with the Quest, this coming week, is the one year anniversary of the death of Lefty Roberts. He was an icon of fund raising and supporter of the Yukon Quest since the inception of the race before it even had a name. He served on the first board of directors and was a board member for a number of years. He is surely missed by many of us.
