Palin pardons one turkey while others slaughtered

Published Friday, November 21, 2008

In this image rendered from video and provided by KARE-TV Minneapolis, Alaska Gov. Gov. Sarah Palin speaks during an interview, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at Triple D Farm & Hatchery outside Wasilla, Alaska. As Palin answered questions cameras from the Anchorage Daily News and others showed the bloody work of an employee, right, slaughtering birds behind the former Republican vice presidential candidate.

TURKEY SPARED

By MICHAEL ROVITO

Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman

WASILLA, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin performed the first pardon of her gubernatorial career Thursday.

With a gaggle of media looking on, Palin read a proclamation granting the short, white male his pardon just in time for Thanksgiving.

His crime: being tender, juicy and overall delicious.

Like many public figures nationwide - including the president of the United States - Palin performed the traditional ceremony of pardoning a turkey just before Thanksgiving Thursday.

The ceremony took place at the Triple D Farm in Wasilla, where a group of workers were busy carrying freshly killed and plucked turkeys in preparation for the holiday.

As his turkey pals - and maybe some family members - watched, the turkey Palin named Thanksgiving got a second chance at life.

He was pardoned just feet from a bloodied tub where Triple D employees worked to fill orders in time for Thanksgiving feasts next Thursday.

The governor's visit couldn't have come at a better time for the bird named Thanksgiving.

Anthony Schmidt, owner of Triple D, didn't mince words just before the pardon when talking about the good fortune one of his turkeys was about to have.

"One of these guys is a lucky dog," Schmidt said.

The practice of pardoning a turkey before Thanksgiving goes back generations and various presidents have given birds new leases on life.

Palin said she was grateful to have the chance to pardon at least one of Alaska's turkeys.

She began the ceremony in a stately voice: "We're gathered here today to spare the life of this turkey."

It's only fitting that a turkey be spared because it's the bird historical figure Benjamin Franklin proposed to be the nation's symbol, Palin said.

Of course, the bald eagle was chosen over the turkey, leading Palin to conclude that for Thanksgiving "one runner-up bird can be protected."

The ceremony didn't last long, and as Palin strode from the turkey pen, her newly pardoned friend clucked and strutted in front of her.

Palin said she's thankful this year that her son Track's Stryker Brigade in Iraq has been safe, her kids are doing well in school and she's back in Alaska.

Thanksgiving, the turkey, was noticeably thankful for the chance to live out his days somewhere other than a holiday dining table.

WASILLA, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin has granted the traditional Thanksgiving pardon to one lucky turkey, but the video that shocked some viewers captured what was happening in the background.

As she answered questions Thursday at Triple D Farm & Hatchery outside Wasilla cameras from the Anchorage Daily News and others showed the bloody work of an employee slaughtering birds behind the former Republican vice presidential candidate.

On the video, Palin didn't comment about the slaughter as she answered questions, saying she's thankful that her son's Stryker brigade is relatively safe in Iraq and the rest of her family is healthy and happy. She said she's glad to be back in Alaska.

"This was neat," she said of the outing. "I was happy to get to be invited to participate in this. For one, you need a little bit of levity in this job, especially with so much that has gone in the last couple of months that has been so political obviously that it's nice to get out and do something to promote a local business and to just participate in something that isn't so heavy-handed politics that it invites criticism. Certainly we'll probably invite criticism for even doing this, too, but at least this was fun."

A fun outing, pardoning a turkey while others in the background are getting slaughtered. Not an accidental juxtaposition by the camera crew, I'm sure.

Pardoning turkeys - I've only ever heard of presidents doing that. Sarah? Did someone forget to leave you a post-it note that the election was over 2 weeks ago? Still got 2012 on the brain, and getting some practice on the duties of president?

By the way, how's our budget looking, Guv?

Step away from the spotlight and cameras for a few minutes, and get back to work, why don'tcha?

There you go again. Facts are important, no matter what you say. “E PLURIBUS UNUM" really does appear on the dollar bill, even if you cannot find it, or do not have the time to find it.

Governors have been pardoning turkeys for a long, long time. And I am not talking about Palin pardoning McCain. Alabama governors have been doing it since 1948. Many governors guilty of the heinous offence of having presidential aspirations have been known to do it. There is nothing new and unusual in this aspect of the story.

And there is nothing new in the “liberal bias in the media.” The national press is skewering Palin because they have just now discovered that turkeys being slaughtered for Thanksgiving might be useful to further their agenda. True, the press has been covering gubernatorial turkey pardons since at least 1948. And true, many in the press were probably aware that millions of turkeys have been slaughtered for Thanksgiving annually. True also is the fact that the press has been aware of both situations for over half a century. But now, the tremendous difference is that there is an opposition candidate to attack. So the press has suddenly discovered the sheer and unforgivable hypocrisy involved in the act of pardoning a turkey for the camera while the turkey “holocaust” occurs as a backdrop.

The only sheer and unforgivable hypocrisy here is not with the act of ceremonial turkey pardons. The only sheer and unforgivable hypocrisy here is with the act of the press allowing itself to be used as a political attack weapon by focusing on trivia, while failing to inform the public about substantive issues.

This is why Tom Brokaw and Charlie Rose can admit that they don’t really know what Obama’s worldview is. This is why neither man seems to recognize the tremendous responsibility and mission of the press in this society.

The only sheer and unforgivable hypocrisy here is with the act of the press failing in its primary mission to inform the public.

I just watched the video in disbelief as she rattled on with the same BS she always rattles on with while the turkeys are being killed right behind her. This film is indicative of the mentality of who we have governing this state. Happy talk while the slaughter goes on right under her nose. (Bush is wonderful and the Iraq invasion/occupation for oil was "God's plan.") I tell ya, the juxtaposition was uncanny. She was so enamored of the camera, she didn't even notice what was going on around her.

Her pardoning of this turkey, however, is nothing compared to the turkeys Bush will most likely pardon in the coming weeks.

Many of us actually like Ms Palin, as her on-the-surface candor has its appeal, and in some great ways she'll prove to be as effective in her political role as are most politicians on a state level. This remark may not sound or be very positive, but many lwr-48 states have experienced or endured some very bad situations.

I'm not sure why the President, the Governor or any other elected politician feels the need to pardon a turkey at all. Does it really matter to most Americans that a few turkeys will not be eaten? Is there some great sense of guilt that must be alleviated by this token act so that we can enjoy dinner? If someone doesn't want to eat a turkey, that is their choice & they can eat what ever they want. But in the great scheme of things, I don't see what difference a pardon for a turkey makes either way.

I don’t know about anybody else, but you know, just once, I’d like to see the President (or even Gov Palin) kill, gut & pluck the feathers off the turkey before they cook it, just like we do to ducks, geese or ptarmigans.

How did y'all think those Turkeys died? There really isn't a more humane way than the (killing) cone and a sharp screwdriver to the brain stem. Look it up.
Fact is, this happens millions of times a day, all over the world. But since when have you seen a prominent political figure actually in the same scene? It just doesn't happen, well, it didn't until now.

I'll acknowledge that many of the Governor's performances of late have been cringe-worthy, and she may well have done more harm to the cause than good. But, you all have to concede the fact that this video was nothing more than a childish act of sabotage.

My comment was based on network news and how they are aligning themselves with their cable network alliances (msnbc logo on NBC news). I opined that the network news would pick up the story and create another sensational story out of nothing. The fact that a local station did the story has nothing to do with it.

What makes you an expert in television stations, their affiliations, and their decision making process on whether or not they pick up a regional story?

This could have been a great interview except for two things:
    1) Being totally unaware that children could watch it on the news and be a little upset at what was going on in the background;
    2) Speaking in complete sentances that make sense would have made more sense but then you have to remember the jobs and yes, being thankful about our troops and yes, giving thanks for what we have up here in Alaska, and of course the economy. ?????????? That made as much sense as her statements. The whole thing could have been done in a professional but light hearted manner and gain her back some followers.

Man, have some turkey already and take a chill.

"She grants them in [sic] interview..." and fails to notice the light in which she might be portrayed if she conducts said interview in front of the slaughter machine. That, my friends, is much more relevant and chilling than whether "KTUU should have framed it differently."

It's not the fact that turkeys are killed before eating them. It's the fact that she was pulling a publicity stunt that backfired.

I haven't been to that turkey farm, and can't say for sure, but I'd venture to guess that the turkeys there are treated better than at the huge factory farms in the lower 48. The funnel method they use doesn't look like much fun for the terrorized animal, but it's much neater than the way my granny used to do it on the farm in South Carolina, which was to chop the head off and let the thing run around with blood spurting out all over the yard.

Oyegi - I agree with you that this is one of the stupidest traditions America has. The ceremonial pardoning of one animal while millions of others are slaughtered on factory farms is incredibly hypocritical, but it sure represents the hypocrisy of holiday itself. The term "Thanksgiving" has a horrible history in America that has been as glossed over as much as Columbus Day. http://www.manataka.org/page269.html

I didn't read a quarter of the comments...but did anyone catch the last sentence Palin said? She predicted people would bash her for a simple event. I haven't been for her lately, considering the stuff she's done, but come on people. She's human, not a robot. I do hope she is back at her office on Monday, to continue her job...a day to participate in holiday cheer isn't going to stop Alaska from functioning...so I don't see all the harm in it.

I'm sure glad I'm old and retired. Who else would have the time to go through this drival. Palin pardons a turkey at Thanksgiving, a time honored tradition for Presidents, Governors, even some town mayors and we spend this much time commenting on it. There's got to be a lot of retired liberals out there with not much to do. Retired, I am, but certainly not a liberal.

    Our People:
Lots of Adults in the USA almost wet their pants by reading a Story about a Turkey getting killed for dinner.

    People across the Pond:
Islamic Terrorists start teaching kids to Kill Chickens near age 4, so they are use to Blood. The Trainers tell the kids that killing Infidels and Jews are just like killing Chickens, and they bleed the same. The Terrorists Trained kids by making them watch films showing US military vehicles being blown up and men falling to a snipers bullet. And then the Kids are telling us, they cannot wait until the day they can serve Allah by dying in achieving a martyr’s death....by Killing Infidels and Jews (You are the Infidels).

The U.S. Soldier’s stands between you, and them.

Wait_for_it, I totally agree. This has been one of the most humorous threads on the dnm website in a long, long time. Didn't have time to respond to it throughout the day, but I kept checking in, and really enjoyed all the comments.

Glockmod, my hat's off to you. Thanks for the reminder that it's a U.S. soldier who stands between us and those who would martyr themselves killing infidels - i.e., all of us. Thanks for the suggestion as to how we individuals can help a soldier over the holidays. I plan to take you up on your suggestion.

But you made me think, Glockmod. In pointing out how the jihadist extremists desensitize their young to the shedding of human blood, it got me to thinking . . . the religious extremists aren't doing that in our own country. But the capitalist extremists are. Every company that produces and promotes - for the sake of sheer profit - the extreme violence found in the video games that our young people relish to play every day, all day . . . are they not, in effect doing the same thing as the jihadists? Every company that produces and promotes ultra-bloody slasher/horror movies, are they not doing the same?

And ok, I'm sure someone out there is ready to argue that they aren't the same at all, because of the *sources* of production and promotion. All I'd like to do is point out, maybe the end result is as important as the source.

The end result being the desensitization of youth to violent bloodshed. I'd say that both hemispheres - east and west - are comparably at fault, and that all roads lead to Rome, or in this case, the tragic and needless devaluation of any human life.

But jeez, Louise, let's get back to the humor, shall we? It's been generally missing from these blogs for all too long of late.

So, um, where will our pardoned turkey end up? Back in the DNC, or RNC? Or on some wildlife preserve, strutting his stuff, or in all likelihood, strutting his stuffing on our dinner plates next week? I have to admit my appetite is being whetted at the latter prospect. Mmm. Add some cranberry sauce, will ya?

As for the Big Bunned One, no problem if she wants to take a time out for a lighthearted outing, however macabre the background scenery may be. And yes, I do think the turkey executioner was *totally* checking out her *ss. Gotta love it!

But, um, Sarah dear, there's more to being governor than irrelevant photo ops. Seems to be something you understood well before August of this year. Wanna reconnect with your old self?

How's the state budget going these days, Gov?

Have any of you seen Jesus Camp? If you don't think the religious extremists in this country aren't preparing for war of one kind or another, then you're not paying attention.

LadyNYC has it right though. I like my leaders to be able to spot a bad photo op when they see one (Mission Accomplished anyone?), but I suppose he or she would have to stop gobbling to be able to see what's going on around him or her. That's what I'd like our governor to do--stop gobbling to everyone and focus, focus on the job at hand, not the job of the future.

Sorry I couldn't give you more humor Wait for it, I used most of it up on my volleys with Ponderous earlier. :)

Oh, and on the subject of Tofurkeys, this is an Onion classic from a few years back:

Virulent Strain Of Soy Flu Traced To Single Tofurkey

SAN FRANCISCO—A virulent strain of soy flu has been traced to a single tofurkey at a Bay Area food-processing factory. "An investigation of Green Earth Foods has located the bird-shaped loaf of firm bean curd from which the infection originated," said Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "To prevent further spreading of the disease, all tofurkeys in Northern California are being quarantined and destroyed." Gerberding said it appears that the soy virus was not transmitted to the factory's Spaghetti & Wheatballs Microwaveable Entree division.

Animals that you kill yourself just taste better. Most liberals think that food comes from a store as directed by government regulation. Do you know that only 5% of the American population is capable of fending for itself in the event of an extended break down in general services. Imagine 100 million liberals crying, "who will feed me". Don't believe me, then explain Katrina and New Orleans.
