To the editor:
I have three children who all went through preschool and now attend public school and another toddler who is attending preschool. I noticed the toddler is being taught to tell lies by telling imaginary stories of an imaginary adventure. Why? I asked myself.
The answer came in a flash; “It is so that the toddler will not grow up to become a self-leader.” Last fall, as we were readying our ATV, the toddler (age 3) looked around at the sky and said, “It’s not raining yet, huh, Dad.” A few hours later it rained. Just today, Nov. 14, the toddler (still 3) said to me, “I’m honest, dad. It always help me.”
When an individual lies, that individual will not be able to clearly see the essence of things. The individual will depend on others or higher power, such as religion or government to solve his/her problem(s). Neither government nor religions solve problems — only seem to or provide a temporary fix. Technology solves our problems. Business brings technology.
A toddler has this honest pure love of self. This love of self makes the toddler strive for knowledge to control his/her world. Lies suppress this love of self within. Pure love is what you feel when protecting that toddler from harm. Prepare yourselves for the future of fully integrated honesty and pure love.

Sounds like they should run for public office. Then when they say nonsense we can at least kick ourselves for voting for him. Mark Hamiltion, ummm, that is the Univeristy of Alaska president. If there is a correlation....
Sounds like some one in the school mentioned God to the toddler and the parents are upset about it. The child has enough good sense to recognize where the rain and everything else comes from. If I'm wrong in my assumption, I apoligize.

trying to wrap my brain around what he is saying though, I believe that he is implying that our children are being dumbed down so that they can be more easily led; it is proven that an uneducated society make better sheeple. He is rambling about the lost values that even his three year old can see are missing from society and today.
I am guessing, actively listening if you will.
I went to the website. It was all word soup.
What I understood from this post is that lying screws up your thinking. You then become dependent because you have alienated yourself from goodness.
Value creator--cool. I wish that more of us were value creators...or at least those who actively stood up for their values. So many of us (myself included) are too busy to take the time to write a letter to the editor, much less work toward promoting our values within our community.
I can't afford enough weed right now to fully understand all that,I guess I could try being a Hamiltonian,I mean if they hate all the right stuff.

Creative thinking, whether from a dream or a child's imagination. Isn't that normal?

I just want to say that the schools are not in some conspiracy to put down your kids and make them liars, it seems to me the exercise is meant to encourage the children's imagination... something vital to educational growth.
Drugs are bad, mkay? So don't do drugs. Because if you do drugs then you'll be bad, so don't do drugs, mkay?

As far as the self love thing goes... I found true happiness is loving others more than yourself. But then again, I don't worship at the alter of the golden child.

There is a BIG difference between a child’s imagination and make believe and lying. Lying is intentionally concealing the truth when you know it is wrong. Kids should be encouraged to use their imagination, how dull this world would be if no one had any creative thoughts.
Technology solves problems? This is a seriously false premise.
The technology of modern automotive transportation may get us places more quickly, but it also pollutes our environment and diminishes public health, because people aren't walking everywhere everyday like they have throughout most of human history. The technology with which we process all the nutritional value out of our food supply may make those products last long enough to be shipped thousands of miles away, but who cares if the end product has only 3.2% of its original nutrients? The technology developed to inject our meat supply with growth hormones may make those animals grow faster, but when we ingest that meat we also grow faster, contributing to the rampant obesity in our society and its related health effects, and making our daughters grow into puberty at 9 years old.
Never think that technology is humanty's saviour.
Although I do appreciate indoor plumbing.
I'm not sure who is responsible for dumbing-down our children. Personally, I believe it stems at home from a loss of a personal relationship with God...and continues downhill from there.
Imagination is a wonderful thing; it is what has spurred humans to create. Children are naturally imaginative. I'm not very imaginative, so for me, it is an incredible experience to witness imagination at work, whether it be an adult's imagination (that of artists, inventors or dreamers), or a child's imagination.
I've listened to heated debates over telling children fairy tales, and to the extreme, letting them watch movies. Some folks I know believe that fairy tales and movies are "lies" and thus should not be allowed. I've never really felt that way. I encourage my own pre-schooler to feed her imagination, while at the time time, teaching her to be honest. I think there is a huge difference between imagination and lying.
I went to the website. I didn't get much out of it. I didn't want to subscribe to any of the links in order to figure out what the website was all about. So if anyone knows, I would appreciate being clued-in.

the guy is from brevig mission. this is native culture (though it sounds as if this particular guy has found an Outside guru-mark hamilton?). however they want to raise their children is their business. it sounds to me if this person is objecting to some of the teaching methods a white teacher has brought to that village. too bad someone from brevig mission didn't go to uaf, get teaching credentials and then return home to teach the children. but i'm assuming that this is the case with out any investigation. so... ignore this post.
It sounds like a sales pitch to me. Granted, a bad sales pitch, but a sales pitch..."why don't you take a look at this web-site for an exciting business opportunity" sort of thing. No thanks, but good luck. Chances are, you will need it.

I didn't go check out the website, however it seems to me that someone was trying to teach Mr. Rock's toddler that the bible is real, ie teaching the toddler to tell lies like "Moses parted the red sea", "million upon millions of species were put into one boat", "burning bushes can talk to people", "people can survive in the heart of a roaring furnace", or "Jesus came back from the dead."
You know, the standard lies that are brainwashed into children from a very early age to make sure that they never become a self-leader, but instead spend their lives as sheeple.
I may be wrong, but that's what I got from the letter...

When I grow up I, too, want to have mindless children robots who have no clear imagination of their own. Because without that imagination they're sure to be great FOLLOWERS, not leaders.

I didn't really understand what the author was trying to say, either.
But then I noticed he lives in Brevig Mission, and it occurred to me that they speak Iñupiaq over there. Thus, there is a probability that perhaps English isn't the author's native language. I'm sure if I (as a native English speaker) tried to write in Iñupiaq, it would be difficult to express my thoughts properly and it would be difficult to understand what I was trying to say.
So, it bothered me to see some of the things others wrote here, especially when none of us is the paragon of linguistic virtue.
I was totally going to write a letter to the editor after my fourth glass of wine...But clearly someone beat me to it.

Damn Niceguy! I didn't know we were commenting on a UAF Alumni Basketball game on this subject...but you started this one.
First off, I'm 43 years old running up and down the court AND holding my own against late teen and twentysomethings.
A bunch of young guys who ask me to still play.
I'm honored to be there....but where were you?
In my younger days I would just jump OVER you on my way to the basket.
That's not happening anymore.
What I'd do now is just punish you for calling me out like that.
The day you're brave enough to step on the hardwood with me....just say "I'm Niceguy," and its on.

WOW oldskoolnook42, I'm impressed! Nice to hear that your keeping yourself healthy. Would love to watch you and Niceguy play. I'm 38 and suck at basketball, I wouldn't mind challenging you just to get some good exercise. Do I have to say something offensive to you or can I just say "I'm angryalaskan" and you say "it's on". And I get one hell of a workout.
Relax Oldschool, you're too tough for me... But saying you held your own is a bit of a strech. However to your point ,you are a large body to get around!
