Federal agents seize hashish in Anchorage

Published Saturday, November 8, 2008

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A package containing 17 pounds of hashish was seized by federal agents at the Federal Express Consignment facility in Anchorage.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency says the drugs had a street value of nearly $100,000.

Hashish is a resin produced from the marijuana plant with higher concentrations of active ingredients than leaves or stems.

Border agents in a separate seizure at the facility found 20 packages containing nearly 600 pounds of khat, a leafy plant that contains an amphetamine-like stimulant.

The shipments were estimated to have a street value of more than $162,000. They arrived from Thailand and were postmarked for Indiana.

Trying to prohibit normal human behavior is also dumb. The whole system is in place to provide job security and revenue to those in government regulation enforcement. Don't believe me, then why, for the last 40 years has nothing changed. Now that the liberals have taken over will this hyper flawed system receive some change we can believe in. I hope so.

    Khat, pronounced "cot."

So, I guess you could say that someone got khat?

Yeah; khat's real common in Sudan, Somalia, and the rest of central/eastern Africa. There's even a reference to it in Black Hawk Down.

Federal agents today seized 340 tons of top ground round with an estimated street value or 500 million dollars.

Does anybody know why we can comment on this story but there does not seem to be an option to comment on the Stepovich Cocaine story?

Yes; the package of thus-far-unknown-ownership is unlikely to sue anyone for libel, whereas the partisan air surrounding many articles in this paper might be interpretted by Mr. Stepovich's attorney to be evidence of bias and libel/defamation. That, and the package is, per the U.S. gov. (rightly or wrongly) inherently 'guilty,' whereas Mr. Stepovich is not yet confirmed to be guilty in the eyes of the law.

When will folks learn that sitting in an idling vehicle in the middle of an otherwise-vacant open parking area surrounded by bright street lights, or standing behind a well-patrolled bar, and engaging in illegal activities, or sending contraband through carriers who are able to open those packages, and/or utilize gas chromatography swabs in defining the contents, in either case (regardless of whether said activity SHOULD be legal or not), is akin to having, "Please arrest me." tattooed on one's forehead??

Felony convictions are like STDs; they're both 'the gift that keeps on giving.' Try to avoid them if at all possible.

And, oh yeah, resist inviting others to engage in felonies with you when that 'other' is previously unknown to you, and is fully prepared to throw you to the dogs in a nano-second when questioned by gummint.

I checked ADN and they have blog comments allowed on the Stepovich story. Curious. What gives DNM?

ADN's policies re. potential libel, etc., are made by THEIR personnel. FDNM sets their own policies for themselves. And yes, Nick Stepovich comes from an old Fbks family, whether or not that makes any difference.

I'd simply consider it a policy matter, specific to the FDNM.

Note that the Police Blog doesn't permit comments anymore, and that the story about the two young men from Fbks who were nabbed with 5 lbs. of pot in Talkeetna involved a stop that occurred roughly 9-10 months earlier; enough time to have permitted things to be more clearly sorted out.

    That's my take, anyway.
