No final word on Ice Classic winner(s) yet

Published Tuesday, May 13, 2008

A week after the ice went out on the Tanana River to stop the clock in this year’s Nenana Ice Classic, there is still no official winner in Alaska’s richest guessing game.

Workers on Monday were comparing tickets to determine who will share in the $303,895 jackpot, Ice Classic administrative assistant Amanda Wubbold said. Officials hope the task will be completed today, but would make no guarantees.

Thus far, only one winner — a woman from Anchorage — has been identified, but officials haven’t released the person’s name yet because they haven’t finished double-checking the 243,776 guesses that were submitted.

The ice officially went out at 10:53 p.m. Alaska Standard Time on Tuesday and officials have been comparing tickets ever since to determine the winner(s).

“We’re short on workers,” Wubbold said, explaining the delay. “A lot of our help is students, and a lot of them can only work three hours a day after school.”
