May 11, 1998 — In the early morning hours on graduation day at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a group of students ignited two fires on campus in what police said was probably meant to be a prank, but could have turned out to be much worse.

“Considering the possible ramifications of what they did last night, what could have happened, we could have had a horrible graduation day today,” UAF Police Chief Terry Vrabec said Sunday evening. “The department’s quick response saved potentially hundred of thousands of dollars, and possibly life.”

Students apparently lit two fires at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday, one on the hill behind the Patty Center, the other in some woods near the Natural Sciences Building.

May 11, 1983 — Taxi cabs and wrecking operators will be the subject of a Fairbanks City Council work session Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. after complaints surfaced at Monday night’s regular council meeting.

Rod Moore, owner of the Yellow Cab Co. of Alaska, and several associates told the council Fairbanks is becoming a “bad cab town” because of bad practices by some drivers. Moore was present at the meeting, but submitted his comments by letter.
