Another spring brings another season for the Tanana Valley Farmers Market, set to open its booths and attractions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

The oldest running farmers’ market in the state, the Tanana Valley market has developed a trustworthy reputation in the Fairbanks area for good products and good company, manager J.R. Anderson said.

“Over the years, this has developed into a thing people come to recognize as a place to get good veggies and a place to go for seeing people you know,” he said, noting the friendships that have developed throughout the years have led to the market’s motto, “We’ll see you at the market.”

Located on the corner of College Road and Caribou Way, the market offers fresh fruits and vegetables with the Alaska Grown guarantee, a state-wide program that ensures quality in Alaska agriculture production.

Anderson said all produce offered at the market bears the Alaska Grown symbol, which lets customers know they are getting the freshest produce possible. Likewise, handmade products and handicrafts bear the Made in Alaska symbol, guaranteeing each was created by in-state producers using Alaskan resources and materials. Alaska Native handicrafts, also available for purchase, bear the Silver Hand seal, also certifying they are made by Alaskan artists with Alaskan materials.

Popular favorites, such as last year’s hit falafels made by husband and wife team Nadav Weiss and Teresa Gross, owners of the Pita Place, also will be open for business.

The market will be open every Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and every Wednesday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. through September.

I was there today hoping for something new. It is the same ol same. No offense to anyone in particular, just as a whole, its just OK, nothing special. I wish it were a true farmers market with actual farmers.
