Flaharty, Weeg set pace in time trial

A record field of 42 cyclists turned out Thursday night as the Fairbanks Cycle Club opened its racing season with the annual Marsha Burnside Memorial Time Trial.

Tyson Flaharty edged out Reese Hanneman for the overall title, while Cathy Weeg captured the women’s crown by about a minute over Davya Flaharty.

Flaharty covered the 12-mile course on Cripple Creek and Isberg roads in 30 minutes, 14.3 seconds, finishing 19.2 seconds ahead of Hanneman (30:33.4).

David Norris captured third place in 31:30.6. Jeff Oatley (31:49.1) and Fred Harbison (32:09.1) completed the top five. There were 31 finishers in the men’s division.

Weeg led the nine women’s finishers with a time of 37:11.41. Flaharty finished second 38:22.9, with Naomi Prater taking third in 38:44.3. Rounding out the top five were Kate Bennot in 40:15.3 and Julie Rolland in 40:25.0.

The next race on the Fairbanks Cycle Club schedule is the Mountain Bike Stage Race May 30-June 1.

BMX Racing

The Far North BMX racing season is underway at the track on 19th Avenue and Kiana Street.

Races are scheduled for every Wednesday night through Aug. 20 and there are four Saturday events on the schedule — June 7, June 28, July 26 and Aug. 23.

Registration for the Wednesday night races is from 5:45-6:45 p.m. and racing starts at 7. Registration for Saturday events is from 10:45-11:45 a.m. and racing starts at noon.

The facility also is open for practice from 6-8 p.m. every Monday. All participants must have a BMX-style bike, a full-face helmet, long sleeve shirt and long pants.

You can reach the track from the Mitchell Expressway, turn north onto Peger Road, left onto 19th Avenue, go two blocks and the track is on the right.
