Fort Wainwright cleans house during yard sale

Published Sunday, June 29, 2008

FAIRBANKS — A rainy Saturday did little to dissuade Lenisha Brown and Roshawnda White from taking advantage of the deals at Fort Wainwright’s post-wide yard sale.

“Of course, it would have been better if it weren’t raining,” White said, noting that while she didn’t find quite what she was looking for, she was happy with the old computer desk she picked up from one family.

Brown was equally pleased with her new treadmill, purchased from the same sale.

“I was looking for something else, but this was something I needed,” she said after loading the exercise equipment into her SUV with a little help from a passerby.

After several hours of rain, yard sales were hard to come by Saturday morning, but those who braved the weather to sell their wares were pleased with the results.

Shortly after noon, Staff Sgt. Parry Hughes and Staff Sgt. Steven Bise had already made several hundred dollars selling hunting bows and a 52-inch HDTV.

“We sold the TV to a husband and wife couple,” Hughes said. “The wife had to like coach him into getting it. Isn’t it normally the other way around?”

Hughes said the main reason he was selling the TV was because he got an equally large, but much thinner, plasma TV.

Meanwhile, Bise was still trying to sell a large, comfy vibrating recliner that he called part of a “bachelor’s dream pad” for $50.

“With a chair like that, you can have your big screen, hook it up to a computer and game all night long,” he said.

“Then set it off to the side for a while, wake up the next morning and go back to gaming.”

Several people not affiliated with the military took advantage of day passes to get on base for the sale.

The sale also gave some soldiers in the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Stryker Brigade Combat Team an opportunity to sell things they won’t need while they’re gone.

Spc. Wesley Werner, scheduled to go to Iraq for the first time this fall, said he asked more seasoned soldiers about things to get rid of before deploying.

“It’s a mix of both trying to get rid of stuff I don’t need and getting rid of stuff I’m not going to use for a year,” he said of the things he was selling.

I completely understand with the rain yesterday. I'm sure half of those selling had garages. However, us here on 599th Street aren't as lucky to have such a luxtury. But I roughed out the rain and over came and imprivised and had my yard sale inside my small two bed room house. It felt like I had a thrift store going on yesterday. But it didn't stop people stopping by. I sold our 48" Big Screen TV, furniture set, I sold my entire set of Evenflo baby travel system, pack n play, swing, and highchair. The lady was so excited that I had entire matching set and at such a good price.
