Runners make torturous way around Chena Ridge

Published Sunday, June 1, 2008

Runners leave the starting line in opposite directions during the annual Two-Way Torture Test running race Saturday morning, May 31, 2008. Runners pair up and tackle the 13-mile Chena Pump / Chena Ridge loop, running in opposite directions, then adding their times together at the end.

A field of 29 two-person teams put themselves through a little bit of torture on Saturday morning.

Starting at the Pump House Restaurant, each runner on a team covered a 13.1-mile course around Chena Ridge in the opposite direction as part of the annual Two Way Torture Test. Times were then combined to determine the overall winners.

Old and In the Way, comprised of race organizer Wayde Leder and Bruce Gard, combined to post a time of 2 hours 59 minutes and 10 seconds to take the overall title and place first in the men’s division.

Leder’s time of 1:24:46 was the fastest time of the day, giving him ample opportunity to reach the finish line and get ready to greet the other 57 runners as they returned to the Pump House.

Team Finstad — Greg and Brent Finstad — took second place in the men’s division in 3:05:26. Third place went to the Kapitalist Piggs — Matt Klick and Jed Smith — in 3:06:18.

First place in the women’s division went to the Birch Hill Babes — Elizabeth Found and Sarah Riddle. They teamed for a time of 3:36:15.

Celtics — Stephanie King and Emma Pokon — garnered the runner-up spot in the women’s division in 3:55:21. Third place went to Go, Sis! — Donna DiFolco and Sharon Baker — in 3:55:55.

Dawn Hurley posted the fastest women’s time of the day with a run of 1:39:02, helping her team to a fourth-place finish in the women’s division.

The mixed division title went to the Chenadogs — Naomi Prater and Michael Richmond — for notching a time of 3:25:24. Herring Heads — Drew Harrington and Melissa Head — posted a 3:27:25 for second place. The third spot went to Half Fast —Ted Wu and Lisa Beattie — in 3:27:45.

Winners received a certificate for brunch at the Pump House, as well as a random drawing won by Dave Leonard.

Complete results are in today’s Sports Scoreboard on Page C2.

The next race on the Running Club North calendar is the Toy Quest Back of the Pack 10K, scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, with the start and finish in the Carlson Center parking lot.
