hmmmm, celebrate the national day of independance with enforcing a law (seatbelts) that takes away freedom.
I agree, it does seem strange. I was pulled over a few years ago at 12:15 am 4th of July by a trooper who admitted he wanted the first DUI of the holiday...so much for freedom. (I was sober, BTW, he had to let me go)
A friend of mine in NY told me she smuggled fireworks across the state line and was worried they would catch her at the checkpoint. Anyone familiar with New York? Do you really have to go through a checkpoint just to enter the state??? Whats up with that???
polarmark - ask the victims of the parks highway crash what took away their freedom more, wearing a seat belt or being dead.
I remember checkpoints in NY. I recall alot of people going to
PA and VT for smokes and beer to so as to avoid taxes.
"polarmark - ask the victims of the parks highway crash what took away their freedom more, wearing a seat belt or being dead."
They made the adult decision to not wear a seatbelt. The result of their decision was fatal. Tragic, but it was their decision to make just like smoking or drinking.
If you remove the emotion and heartbreak of their families, the only person affected by not wearing a seatbelt is the person who doesn't wear the seatbelt. We, as a society, shouldn't be legislating those kinds of personal responsibility issues.
Contrast the seatbelt law with the lack of a law against talking on a cell phone while driving.
Seatbelt laws are pure money grabs.
If the 2 other boys survive, and hopefully they do, I bet they will never go without wearing a seat belt again. If the seat belt laws make even a few people say "hey dude, you should probably put that on so we don't get pulled over" then it is worth it.
