Hot, windy weather could boost fire danger on Fourth of July

FAIRBANKS -- Hot, dry conditions could put a damper on Fourth of July fireworks plans.
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of the Interior and the Copper River Vally on Thursday.
Heidi Strader, fire weather forecast for the Alaska Fire Service, said warm and dry conditions will continue but the chance of afternoon showers will increase through the weekend.
People who are planning to fire off fireworks should keep the conditions in mind, officials said.
Fireworks should be set off one at a time under adult supervision. If a firecracker does not become active, do not attempt to relight it, said Mahlon Greene, public education coordinator for the Department of Fire and Life Safety.
People should also check to see if fireworks are legal in their area before lighting them, Greene said.
“There are only a few areas in the state where it’s legal,” he said.
Other things to be aware include looking at the packaging of the fireworks to determine if it consumer-grade or meant for pyrotechnic displays. Greene said plain brown or cardboard packaging could indicate the fireworks were homemade or meant to be used by a professional.

It would be nice if hot weather and wind would stop people from fireworks. I got a bad feeling (besides my usual aches and pains) about tommorrow and fireworks. Hope that I'm wrong.
I don't see us activating any burn permits over the weekend, THAT'S for sure.
If you'd like to call the Division of Forestry, whether to activate a burn permit, or even to ask if open fires are banned, it's 451-2626. Outside the FNSB, it's 1-888-615-2626.
