Flare false alarms costly, Coast Guard says

Stumble It!ANCHORAGE — The Coast Guard wants to know if you decide to teach your children how to set off emergency flares.
Someone didn’t do that last weekend, and the Coast Guard investigated what it thought was an emergency distress situation near Fox Island.
Coast Guard officials say five hours and $50,000 later, the source of the flares was discovered to be a man teaching his children how to set off the emergency flares.
Coast Guard officials say responding to such false alarms not only puts their crews at risk, but could prevent them from responding to actual emergencies.
The Coast Guard says false distress calls cost the Coast Guard and Alaskan taxpayers more than $2 million annually.
