Kassel to ask for recount in District 7 race

Published Thursday, December 4, 2008

FAIRBANKS — Karl Kassel said he fully intends to ask for a recount in the House District 7 race with incumbent Mike Kelly, after the two candidates were separated by just one vote when results were certified Wednesday.

When the Division of Elections certified the 2008 election results on Wednesday, Kassel was busy repairing two flat tires on his wife’s Jeep. He said that means his request for a recount would have to wait until today.

“My day is busy with the two tires, but I’m expecting to drop a letter by (today),” he said.

Kassel remained in high spirits Wednesday despite trailing by one vote with more than 10,000 ballots cast.

“I’d sure like to know what I’m doing next month,” Kassel said.

A recount could begin as late as Tuesday. Final recounted results will be in a day later.

Gail Fenumiai, director for the Alaska Division of Elections, said her division was already preparing for the recount.

“We can do the recount within a day,” Fenumiai said.

According to a press release issued by the Division of Elections, the 2008 general election generated a record turnout of early, absentee or questioned ballots. Those votes totaled more than 119,000 throughout the state. In 2004, there were just 85,000 early votes, the press release stated.

More than 66 percent of the population voted, which amounted to 327,341 total ballots.

How can they do a re-count in one day when the initial counts took a lot longer?

Because they were waiting for all the votes to arrive?

All the votes to arrive from absantee ballots because the D.O.E. dateline was when ballots were postmark and now it is way past for any ballot from the election day to get in. Crazy one vote their is a chance maybe their was one vote counted wrong or skipped. I would have voted Kelly but I would do the same is I was Kassel and ask for a re-count.

Funny story Im a former UAF student and current USC (South Carolina) student and lost my election by 1 vote also.
