Poll puts Nanooks among nation’s top 20
Published Tuesday, December 2, 2008
Impressive play by the Alaska Nanooks hockey team has caught the attention of the nation’s hockey watchers.
In Monday’s U.S. College Hockey Online/CBS poll of media observers who cover hockey, the Nanooks were ranked No. 20 among National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I men’s hockey teams.
The Nanooks earned that spot with eight wins, four losses and two ties overall this season. That’s a fine set of statistics to have sitting next to one’s team name. It’s actually a better win-loss record than a number of the teams ranked above Alaska in the poll.
Alaska still trails the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, which were ranked at No. 15 in the media poll. But Alaska came in ahead of such teams as St. Cloud State, the University of Wisconsin and Ohio State University — none of them slackers.
The strong early record is being built by a relatively young team, making the results even more impressive. The Nanooks have more freshmen than any other Central Collegiate Hockey Association team this season.
They also have a new head coach. Dallas Ferguson has been with the team as an assistant coach for several years, but this is his first year running the show.
In an interview with the News-Miner this fall, Ferguson said he wanted the Nanooks to be tenacious. “A team that never quits, a team that plays hard,” he said. “A team that is willing to go to the tough areas to score goals.”
It seems to be working.

Way to go Blue and Gold. Keep it rolling.
Kudos to the News Miner for the recognition.
I was being to think it was going to take a ticker tape parade up Cushman Street with the Mason Cup in hand knocking at the doors of the News Miner to get some press this season.
But I am sure a few of us fans will provide the bubbly to see a few sports writers take a sip from the Mason Cup.
