Potential arrest made in College Road shooting case

Published Wednesday, August 20, 2008

FAIRBANKS — A possible suspect in Friday’s gang shooting off College Road and Illinois Street was arrested at 10:15 p.m. Saturday.

Fairbanks Police Officer B.C. Rigdon received a tip that Aaron Young, 21, a possible suspect in the shooting, had been seen in the Denny’s parking lot in a 2001 tan Chrysler.

About a half-hour later, Rigdon found the vehicle driving toward Cowles Street and pulled it over for a traffic stop at 2231 Cowles St. with the suspicion that Young was in the car.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody without incident, but was not charged. Police confirmed that Young was in the passenger seat.

When asked to get out of the car, Young complied but refused to lift his shirt above his waistband so police could see whether he was in possession of a weapon, according to court documents.

After the third time ignoring the officer’s request, Young reportedly admitted he was in possession of a weapon.

Rigdon ordered Young to the ground at gunpoint and removed a loaded 9 mm Ruger handgun with a round in the gun’s chamber.

Sgt. Gary Yamamoto, who was called in for backup, allegedly found eight grams of cocaine and 19 grams of suspected marijuana that later tested positive for THC, the hallucinogenic ingredient in marijuana.

Young was charged with two class B felonies and two misdemeanors.

As a suspect in the gang shooting, Young was charged with second-degree misconduct involving a weapon regarding a drug crime and third-degree misconduct with a controlled substance with the intent to deliver.

In addition, Young was charged with two class A misdemeanors after being arrested by Fairbanks Police: misconduct involving a controlled substance because of the amount of marijuana and other paraphernalia that led officers to believe he was distributing drugs and misconduct involving a weapon in the fifth degree for failing to reveal his weapon to the police upon being arrested as a suspect in Friday’s shooting.

Police also found $1,371 in cash and a key belonging to an Isuzu vehicle.

Young, who was found with a blue bandana in his pocket, admitted he is a member of the Crips gang.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Fairbanks Police are interested in locating a white or silver Isuzu Trooper with Oregon license plates. Anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle is encouraged to contact the Fairbanks Police Department.

Outstanding. Keep up the good work FPD. I can only hope that very soon, gang-related apparel and activities will become a serious hindrance to an individuals' freedom.

Well, it's a start. Only several dozen to go. The police officer is lucky that kid wasn't a hardcore Crip, or things may have went badly during the arrest. Good job FPD!!

Very glad to see this - Thanks to the Officer who was paying attention and stopped this fella....

Woulda been happier if the bum got tased...or more

Now place this guy on the front porch of the police station and let us all drive by and take a few wild shots at him - I went to the range and was practicing gangsta side-ways shooting this weekend

You could sell tickets like the rubber duckie races - I'd buy one

The officer should have tased him after the 2nd request to lift his shirt was ignored. AKGUY- how was your accuracy on the range? If you hit anything, you'd make those gangstas look bad, LOL...

    hah -

wag - if we pass out enough ammo one of us is bound to score a hit :)

Lemmie know when he get outta the slam - I volunteer to drive around behind him, calling the police at every infraction, until he leaves town -

maybe we can get one of those big signs like they use at Driver's Ed that says 'gang-banger' on it and glue it to the sides of his car

    wow -

look up this guy on http://www.courtrecords.alaska.gov/

I am assuming he is the 21 year old listed in the multiple entries...

Looks as if he has already played with the law on numerous occasions - time to put him away for a while now hopefully

Not only can't he shoot, he can't drive either... He' been caught driving without a license more times than I've renewed mine, LOL. Looks like he got real familiar with the traffic court judge.... See a weapons misconduct and drug possession as well. Talk about your menace to society. And just imagine, he's only 21, yikes....

Corrine- that is part of THE disinformation campaign. THC is not listed as a hallucinogenic nor should it.

To the FPD- GREAT JOB! At least you got another punk of the street even if it is only a potential arrest (what is that anyway?).

    Doozzer,
The potential is probably for the shooting. They found evidence of the drugs on him, but still have to prove both. They should have said something more like "Arrest made of potential assailant in College Road shooting case" (or something like that). It would would have made things a little clearer.

I think "potential arrest" meant that the person (and I use that term loosely) they arrested was potentially the one involved in the crapfest on College Road.

akguy - Practicing shooting gangsta sideways... you crack me up! I'd certainly buy a Gangsta Shooting ticket.

Great job, FPD! I'm glad that traffic stop did not go badly.

    Hey wait.....he's not a soldier...?

As soon as we are fininshed demanding news conferences and answers from the post commander we need to demand the same of our judges. The court dockets show he's been in trouble 12 different times from stalking, weapons and drug charges, to no seatbelt. Each time the fines were dropped from being in the hundreds to his most expensive of $50. Not one of those fines was paid. So our own court system has taught this idiot: Get in trouble? Here's a fine. Can't pay fine, we'll lower it. Refuse to pay it.?. ok well maybe next time.

So it wasn't only Gangsta rap that created him, it was our court system. Yep, I'm betting he'll walk. At least he got a hot meal and warm place to stay on our tax dollars.

anwrfriend - "Keep the heat on all the time!"

Not quite correct...better to wait till mid-November then cut his heat off, cut off his power, turn off his cell phone, haul his car to the landfill, and on his door post a big sign that says "The city of Fairbanks reserves the right to refuse service to anyone".

Community action is the answer to this problem; for more information on how to deal with gang violence, rent the movie "Tombstone".

    But then, mabey I'm hallucinating...

Maybe the real drug problems will be cleaned up in this city now that it has been exposed. The City Mayor and Chief of Police can not hide behind the chronic inebriates any longer. You got to hand it to them, they sure did a good job hiding the truth from the public. Maybe they both can ask forgiveness and make amends to the chronics for using them as a smoke screen.

Pretty funny he admitted to being in the gang. Wonder how long he's been in this gang...or even how long gangs have been in this town?? Kind of interesting to wonder who and when thought to start 'em up here. Guess LA got a little too crowded...?

In past news reports, it was said that military personnel were involved. They had to be an antagonist in the situation, or there wouldn't have been any cause for a shooting spree. Not all military people are fighting for us like many like to think. A small, yet stereotypical group fight against us by causing everyday crimes against FAIRBANKS(society)!
As far as the FPD goes... Unless someone is screaming bloody murder, they will only mainly go after the money. i.e. DUI's and speeding.

I guess the drug dealers finally lost enough respect for the local law enforcement (they NEVER get busted, only pot growers do) and felt comfortable shooting at each other in the middle of town in broad daylight, kinda hard to sweep that one under the carpet.
