FAIRBANKS — Alaska Nanooks freshman middle blocker Megan Morrison stepped out of the limelight and into the spotlight Saturday to help the Nanooks gain their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference win of the season.
Morrison was named the GNAC Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week as her 15 kills, seven blocks (one solo) and .353 attack percentage enabled the Nanooks to defeat the Simon Fraser Clan in four games at the Patty Center.
“She took a big step last weekend and was certainly instrumental in our win on Saturday night,” Nanooks coach Phil Shoemaker said in a press release. We’re counting on good progress over the course of the rest of the season with her and with the team. It’s a good sign.”
Morrison turned in team-bests of 20 kills, a .269 hitting percentage and nine total blocks in the Nanooks’ split against then No. 16 Western Washington and Simon Fraser.
Her Saturday night efforts were easily the best of the season.
“Seven blocks in a three or four set match is a great performance for anybody,” Shoemaker said. “We knew coming in that Megan had a great presence in terms of personality and physicality on the court. Once again, it’s good to see her grow.”
Seattle Pacific’s Shelby Swanson was named Defensive Player of the Week after registering 67 assists and 23 digs to help the Falcons to a pair of 3-0 sweeps on the road at Western Oregon and Saint Martin’s.
The Nanooks (1-6 GNAC, 3-10 overall) hope to continue their winning ways on Thursday at Montana State Billings (4-3, 7-8) and Saturday at Seattle Pacific (4-3, 7-9).
