FAIRBANKS—The Monroe Catholic Rams and West Valley Wolfpack both suffered 3-1 losses in the opening round of the ASAA First National Bank Alaska State Volleyball Championships Thursday in Wasilla.
Playing in the Class 3A tournament, Monroe Catholic dropped a 26-24, 20-25, 25-18, 29-27 decision to the Nome Nanooks.
West Valley, playing in the 4A tournament, suffered a 25-22, 18-25, 25-16, 26-18 loss to the East Anchorage Thunderbirds.
Both teams still have a chance to win state titles, but they’ll have to do it by coming through the losers’ bracket in the double-elimination tournaments.
Monroe Catholic opens play at 11 a.m. today against the Nikiski Bulldogs, while West Valley takes on the Soldotna Stars, also at 11 a.m. today.
In other opening round 3A games Thursday, Valdez defeated Barrow 3-0, Grace Christian downed Skyview 3-1 and defending state champion Mt. Edgecumbe beat Nikiski 3-1.
In the winners’ bracket semifinals Thursday night, Grace Christian edged Valdez 3-2 and Mt. Edgecumbe swept Nome 3-0.
If Monroe Catholic wins this morning, the Rams will play Aurora conference rival Valdez at 3 p.m.
In opening round 4A action, Juneau-Douglas edged Kodiak 3-2, Dimond swept Palmer 3-0 and South Anchorage topped Soldotna 3-2.
Dimond defeated Juneau-Douglas 3-0 in one winners’ bracket semifinal, while South Anchorage posted a 3-0 win against East Anchorage in the other semifinal.
If West Valley wins this morning, the Wolfpack will battle Juneau-Douglas at 3 this afternoon.
