A memorial service will be held this evening for the top noncommissioned officer at the Bassett Army Community Hospital emergency room.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Bryan Hays, 40, collapsed in the locker room after running on a treadmill Monday morning during a routine morning physical training exercise, said hospital spokeswoman Brady Ostanik. He was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital where he later died. The exact cause of death is still being investigated.

Originally from Louisiana, Hays joined the Army in 1999 as a combat medic and was the non-commissioned officer in charge of emergency services at Bassett at the time of his death.

He served two yearlong deployments to Iraq and earned awards and decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, a Joint Meritorious Unit Award, two Iraqi Campaign Medals, a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, one Army Service Ribbon, four Overseas Service Ribbons, the Expert Field Medical Badge and the Combat Medical Badge, according to an Army news release.

The memorial service is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Southern Lights Chapel on Fort Wainwright.
