FAIRBANKS — The state medical examiner’s office agreed with Fairbanks police that a shooting reported last week at the Tanana River dock likely was a suicide.
Fairbanks police received the state medical examiner’s report Wednesday for Michael Terrance Williams, and like the police report, it indicated Williams killed himself. It appears he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest from a .22 Derringer pistol, detective Chris Nolan said. The report all but closes the investigation, though Nolan said he still needed to call Williams’ wife to give her the news.
Police believe Williams committed a string of violent crimes in the final hours of his life, including the kidnapping and sexual assault of his ex-girlfriend and the non-fatal shooting of her boyfriend, based on accounts from these two victims. Police never found any reason to doubt their accounts while investigating the case, Nolan said.
