FAIRBANKS - A man was found dead in a wooded area off Peger Road south of Airport Way Wednesday.

The man has been identified, but police are not publicly identifying him pending the notification of his next of kin, Fairbanks police Sgt. Kurt Lockwood said.

The man was found on a mattress in an open tent, Lockwood said. There was no evidence of foul play, but the man’s body is being sent to the state medical examiner for autopsy. From an initial review of the scene it appears the man died from exposure, Lockwood said.

Police presume the man was somewhat new to the area because they did not recognize him from their periodic contacts with Fairbanks’ homeless population, Lockwood said.

Contact staff writer Sam Friedman at 459-7545.
