FAIRBANKS — A man seriously injured in a house fire in Minto Saturday has been identified as Wayne Charlie, 50.
Charlie was burned on more than 50 percent of his body and was flown to Seattle for treatment. His prognosis is unknown.
Charlie’s housemate, Mary Ann Attatayuk, 55, was not breathing when she was pulled from the fire and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Alaska State Troopers said the fire started in a bed and both Attatayuk and Charlie were known smokers. Alcohol likely was a factor.
The building sustained heavy smoke damage and a clock inside melted at 6:45 p.m., according to troopers.
Minto, a village of about 260 residents northwest of Fairbanks off the Elliott Highway, has no fire department but community members helped battle the blaze with buckets and hoses. A former Village Public Safety Officer and a VPSO from another village pulled Attatayuk and Charlie from the building. No one else was injured in the fire.
