FAIRBANKS—If Tuesday’s victory over Hutchison was any indication, things could be looking up for the Lathrop High School volleyball team.
The Malemutes rallied for a four-set victory *(24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 25-16) in the nonconference game at Ryan Middle School.
“They were playing aggressively,” Lathrop head coach Joe Donoghue said by telephone. “They were talking with each other and they were moving to the ball at the same, covering a lot more of Hutch’s hits.”
The Malemutes (2-10 overall) were aided by the front-court play of freshman middle blocker Ruthie Hebard, who had seven solo blocks to go with her team-high nine kills.
Christine Angell contributed a team-best nine digs along with seven kills and she accounted for three of Lathrop’s 15 aces.
Abbi Walker served a team-high five aces, dispensed 18 assists and came up with seven digs. Emily Krier delivered four aces and collected seven digs.
The Malemutes also got six kills from Mikayla Triplehorn, two blocks from Dahnina Matautia in her one-set appearance and single aces from Karli Fitzgerald, Cali Hoyos and Yvhonne Sam.
Lathrop visits West Valley at 6 p.m. Thursday in a Mid Alaska Conference game. The Malemutes are 1-3 in conference action.
No statistics were reported Tuesday for Hutchison, which visits Delta Junction at 6 p.m. Thursday for an Aurora Conference contest.
