FAIRBANKS — Mid Alaska Conference wrestling teams finished in the middle of the pack at the Alaska 4A Dual Championships held Friday and Saturday in Anchorage.
North Pole finished in eighth place, while Lathrop was ninth and West Valley placed 11th in the 16-team competition.
Each team wrestled five matches during the event.
Even though North Pole went 2-3 in its meets, the Patriots finished higher than Lathrop and West Valley in the team standings. Lathrop and West Valley both had 3-2 record.
North Pole opened the tournament with a 43-30 triumph against West Anchorage. The Patriots lost to eventual runner-up Colony in the second round, 62-16, then knocked off West Valley 53-12. A 47-30 loss to South Anchorage put North Pole in the seventh-place match where the Patriots dropped a 45-39 decision.
Lathrop lost to East Anchorage in its opening bout, 48-28. The Malemutes beat Kenai 65-18 in the second round and suffered a 64-19 loss to South Anchorage in the third round. After beating Dimond 64-19, the Malemutes finished up the weekend with a 55-19 win against South/Service in the ninth-place match.
West Valley lost its opening match to Service 64-15, but rebounded for a 52-20 victory against Eagle River. After losing to North Pole, the Wolfpack defeated South/Service 51-9 and downed Dimond 57-24 to claim 11th place.
Wasilla won the championship with a 32-29 victory rival Colony. Palmer took third place with a
40-39 victory against South Anchorage. Fifth place went to Kodiak after the Bears defeated East Anchorage
Prep wrestling action continues at 6 p.m. Tuesday when West Valley takes on North Pole in a dual meet.
Lathrop junior Kasey Barnes posted a 559 out of 600 to win Saturday’s smallbore competition at the Mid Alaska Conference Rifle Championships Saturday at the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ E.F. Horton Range on the lower level of the Patty Center.
