Letter to the editor

Sept. 21, 2012

To the editor:

I am writing to endorse Luke Hopkins for borough mayor. I think he has lived up to his slogan “Luke Listens,” and I appreciate his commitment to fair representation for all the people of the borough. It’s not easy to balance diverse needs while staying fiscally responsible.

I was particularly impressed by the way he handled the wood stove situation. On the one hand, fuel oil prices have gone up to the point of hardship for many, and, hey, we don’t want to freeze. Then again, breathing is not optional either. The wood stove exchange program was a reasonable solution, and it is working. This allows people to keep burning wood. It doesn’t put an undue financial burden on individuals that switch to a better stove. It helps the air. It keeps local control of issues.

Luke is also working to bring in natural gas by truck or rail and start a local natural gas utility. That’s a real solution that will make a difference sooner than waiting for a pipeline.

There will always be those who are unhappy unless they get things exactly their way, but the mayor’s job is to work for the greatest good for the most people, and Luke has done that.

I encourage others to join me in voting for Luke Hopkins on Oct. 2
